The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

Title: The Indigo Spell
Author: Richelle Mead
Publisher: Razorbill
Release: February 12, 2013
Series: Bloodlines
Pages: 416
Review: Five Stars

Oh, dang, this book was good. I read it when it came out in February, but forgot to review it. The book is so amazing, I can't even begin to describe it. The Indigo Spell is the third out of six books in the Bloodlines series, which is a spin-off of the Vampire Academy series, which I reviewed here. I reviewed the previous book in the series, The Golden Lily here. The author warned that the temperature would be turned up in this book, and oh boy was she right! The plot is action-packed, the characters are amazing, and the romance is off the charts. The story doesn't start slow and warm up, no it starts with a bang. It's funny and cute and well thought-out. Not one detail is missing. It develops beautifully and doesn't stop just because the page has.

The main character is Sydney Sage. I have to say, this girl BLEW ME AWAY! She's very smart (genius more like) and is shy for the first couple books. In this book, she throws out her good-girl attitude and grows into a more powerful, amazing, likable character. She realizes that she has issues and begins to mend them. Her relationships with characters grow tremendously. Her life is thrown upside-down in book one, and now she's making the most of it. Sydney makes the most of what she has and does things she swore she'd never do. By the end, she's touching the flames, and it's only a matter of time before she gets burned. Sydney grows into who she is and accepts that she's not who she always thought she was. She gets help, and helps, the most unlikely of sources. All the while the subplots with other characters are thickening. Amidst all of her own drama, Sydney has to deal with four other people's drama as well, and she handles it remarkably. Problems are solved. Tension explodes. Issues emerge from the ashes. And a sense of foreboding descends on the readers.

How great this book is does not stop amazing me. I still like the Vampire Academy series better, but dang it, the characters in Bloodlines are really growing on me. Whenever a character from both series was in there, I squealed with joy. There was a lot of squealing to say the least. I cannot get enough of these books. I can honestly say, I cannot wait for The Fiery Heart, which comes out this November. The Indigo Spell is fun and flirty, with the perfect amount of serious mixed in. The action is intense. The plot is thick. And the romance is sparking. The Fiery Heart cannot come soon enough! I give this book five stars.

Series Sunday: Masque of the Red Death Saga by Bethany Griffin

Titles: Masque of the Red Death, Dance of the Red Death, Glitter and Doom-Novella
Author: Bethany Griffin
Publisher: Greenwillow
Number of Books: Two
Review: Four Stars

I really enjoyed the first book in the series. Masque of the Red Death was different and interesting. It kept me on my toes and I couldn't put it down. It's based off of the Edgar Allen Poe poem, Masque of the Red Death. Though I hadn't read it before I read the books, after I finished, I read the poem and could see the resemblance, especially in Dance of the Red Death. It was an interesting idea that developed into a very unique story.

The main character is Araby Worth. For a good bit of the first book, I see a very weak, broken girl who has moments of strength. I don't like her right off the bat, but I pity her. As she grows stronger, I like and enjoy her character more and more. I like her relationships with others, from her best friend April to her father to her memories of her twin brother Finn. The relationships develop and either grow stronger or break off entirely. There's a love triangle in the book between Will and April's brother, Elliot. While Elliot's and Araby's relationship feels forced and fake, Will and Araby seem to fit together perfectly. Either way, the relationships encounter obstacles and issues that they must get past. This shapes Araby into a lovable heroin. Her view changes throughout the books, as does the readers.

The plot is slow at points, especially in Dance of the Red Death. While Masque of the Red Death is face paced and quirky, Dance of the Red Death is just not as fun. Both books are deep and thought out which create for a good story. They were both amazingly written and eloquent. I felt as if I was reading pure poetry at points. They're the perfect mix of creepy, romance, and action that I couldn't help but enjoy them. I had to persevere through them sometimes, but it was overall worth it. Even if I don't pick up the books again, I'll surely remember them. They receive a strong four star review.

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Title: Siege and Storm
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Publisher: Henry Holt/Macmillan
Release: June 4, 2013
Series: Grisha
Pages: 448
Review: 3.5 Stars

Okay. This book was okay. It was much slower than the first book, which was a big disappointment. A lot of world and character building took place, which, while important, I did not want to read so much of. I enjoyed the little scenes and conversations, but it dragged on. No big events happened until the end, and by that point, it was obvious something had to happen. The book as a whole was good and was very well written, it wasn't much fun to read.

The main character, Alina Starkov, was a bit of a bore. I love how she was able to take charge and stand her ground, but then she'd just turn around and doubt herself. The amount of self-doubt in this book, with all characters, was suffocating. She would demand control, and then think that she couldn't do it. Alina is an amazing character with a lot of potential, but she didn't embrace it in this book. Her powers grow and Alina begins to get greedy. Though I have to give her props, her powers are awesome. The character Mal was a pain in the butt. He is the main love interest in the book and I cannot stand him. The Darkling betrayed Alina in book one, but I'd rather she end up with him than Mal. Mal feels like and unnecessary character who only added complications. He's only annoying in the beginning, but as the story goes on, he doubts himself as well as Alina. He does idiotic things and says even worse. Alina wants to trust him and have him by her side, but how can she do that if he continues to run off on her? Various other characters add and subtract to the story. My favorite being Stormhund and least being Mal. I love Tolya and Tamar, and can't help but pity Genya.

Spoiler Warning!

A boring book I can deal with. It's not my favorite route, but I can deal. I can't get over the ending though. In the end, Alina almost sucks out the Darkling's power, just about killing both of them. She survives and escapes, as does the Darkling. Though I know that Ruin and Rising will be book three and will hopefully satisfy my need for an ending, it could have ended in Siege and Storm. Unless the ending of Ruin and Rising is amazing and spectacular, I wouldn't have minded Alina dying as well as the Darkling at the end of the book. Why? It's not because I hate Alina. I actually really like her, despite how I complained about her earlier. She's a strong character and a good heroin. But, I would have been satisfied if Alina killing the Darkling and going along for the ride. Ruin and Rising could be from another character's POV where they clean up the mess. Alas, it didn't end that way. That's okay though, because, hopefully, the ending of Ruin and Rising will be even better.

Re-Review: Opal by Jennifer L Armentrout

I've come to realize something. Over time, my ideas on books will change, along with my reviews. I was rereading Opal when I realized this. Below, I copied the original review of Opal. In bold, I've added my comments and/or additions to the review. I will start doing this time to time when my review of a book changes. I will always note when it's a re-review. Feel free to add your opinions in the comments!

*Sigh* Opal is amazing! Yet another awesome book by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Let me tell you, the stakes are raised tremendously and you never know if there's a traitor or betrayal right around the corner! This book had so many plot twists, I could never tell what was going to happen next. It's yet another gobble-it-up in one sitting book.

Katy and Daemon, they just can't seem to get along, even when dating. They're both stubborn as mules which I'd guess is a big factor. Daemon can't stand to see Katy in danger and Katy can't stand to sit on the sidelines. They have very differing opinions, but the times they're not fighting...wow. It's the only comment I can make. Daemon is much more than a stubborn mule. While his cocky and rude attitude is funny and exciting in the first book, by book three, it's gotten kinda old. He acts increasingly mean to Katy, so much so that I couldn't finish the reread. I feel like he puts down her character. While earlier insults had no depth and Katy could brush them off, they now know each-other well and he knows exactly how to get under her skin. Daemon insults who she is, not just what she's trying to do. Katy doubts herself in this book. Not a single character stands up for her or is a friend. Her best friend is playing the blame game and Katy's going right along with it. Daemon is putting her down and he won't listen to her when she needs him to most. While I wish her character was stronger in this book, no one stepped in to help her self-esteem. She needed a rock and instead got a bunch of pebbles. The one person who seems even slightly there for Katy is Daemon's older brother Dawson. While romantically, his interests lie elsewhere, he is the only one that understands exactly what Katy's been through as of the end of book two. He empathizes with her and her with him. He's not the most stable rock, but he's there. He provides momentary relief until all the other characters come back to their senses.

Opal will make you smile and want to throw the book at the wall (I think I almost did at points). But that's what a good book and author does. While that's true, I wish the smile slightly outweighed the throw the book at the wall. If you can feel along with the characters and feel just as in deep as the characters, well, that's a good story that's sucked you right in. The books in this series have totally done that for me. Opal is the third out of five books plus a prequel. The prequel comes out in February and the fourth book comes out in the summer. Opal is fully deserving of this five star review! I enjoyed Opal as a whole. It's plot is still enticing. I just couldn't stand the characters. Luckily, I have hope for them in book four, Origin, but I will not be picking up Opal again for a while. The story is good and fun, but I can't get past the characters and therefore cannot enjoy all the amazing aspects of the book. Opal has been downgraded to a three.

Series Sunday: Abandon Trilogy by Meg Cabot

Wow! These books blew me away. I read some of Meg Cabot's other novels when I was younger (Allie Finkle anyone?), but these are a whole other level of awesome. The Abandon books are fun, interesting, deep, and sizzling hot. The romance in these books is off the charts. While there's minimal adult content, the tension is perfectly done. I can't stop turning the pages. Each book was better than the last. The final book Awaken came out a couple weeks ago and rocked! Often times, the final book, especially in a trilogy, disappoints me but this did not. It summed up the story, tied the loose ends, and all the while had just as much or more, action, romance, and intrigue as the previous books. A fun read for sure!

The main character is Pierce Oliveira. She is a strong heroin who has dealt with way more than many people. Two years previous to the books, Pierce died. Since then, she's had to put up with her best friends suicide, being labeled mentally unstable, her parents divorce, and a very rocky relationship with fellow protagonist, John. Yet she made it out alive, and better at that. She's only more determined to protect those she loves. That determined attitude alone assures readers that she won't give until she, and everyone else, get the happy endings they deserve. From matchmaker to riding on horseback into battle, Pierce does it all. A fury is after you? No problem. Relationship issues? Easy peasy. Possessed? She'll be right over. No matter the problem she faces, she comes out on top, no matter what others tell her. Even when those closest to her doubt her, she comes through for them. And trust me, there's a lot of doubt.

The plot is simply amazing. I followed every twist and turn with glee. It's an emotional roller coaster that doesn't stop just because the book has. The unpredictable happens and normal is thrown out the window. It's an original take on the Persephone myth and Greek mythology as a whole. A few questions are left unanswered, but overall, the end of the series is satisfying. On a side note, the conversations are hilarious. Whenever two characters are discussing a touchy or unwanted subject, hilarity ensues, mostly due to Pierce. I laughed, cried, screamed, and squealed my way through these books. They get a solid 4.5 stars!

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

I really liked this book. The characters are solid. The plot is strong. The backstories are deep. The world is large. And the aspect of mystery intrigues me. While it didn't have the same pull as other books, I still enjoyed it immensely. Shadow and Bone is a book I've seen around for a while. Whenever there's a collection of YA books, it's amongst them. It's never seemed like my kinda book, but I gave in and read, if only to say that I had. I picked up the book from the library and started reading as soon as I could. I was immediately drawn into the story and had a long drive ahead of me. I plowed through the book and finished by the time I arrived. It's an amazing I high fantasy novel that I highly recommend.

The main character is Alina Starkov. Along with having amazing talents, she's simply a strong character. Physically, she's very weak, at least in the beginning. As Alina's power develops, so does she. Over the course of the book, she learns what she is willing to fight for. She earns true friends that, even when they later come into question, it is no question to the reader who they're loyal to. She learns that everything is not as it seems. A person may act one way, and think another. A friend may be an enemy and and enemy may be a friend. Alina trusts easily, which is a good trait, but may very well be her downfall. Though she feels weak at points, overall, Alina Starkov is deep, complex, and interesting character I can't wait to get to know better.

Shadow and Bone is a cross between Graceling by Kristin Cashore and Imperial Russia. There is no doubt that it's high fantasy, in a world that belongs to the author completely. While reading the book, almost immediately noticed the similarities between names, the language, as well as the government system to that of pre-WWI Russia. Hopefully, the country of Ravka won't follow the same path. The plot is a high-stakes chase full of action, romance, and intrigue. Readers won't be able to put the book down. While it's not my favorite book of 2013, it definitely makes the list. I give the book 4.5 stars.

Excerpt:

“So where is he?” She cranes her neck, trying to spot Ryan in the crowd.
Heart pounding, my mind hiccups through its storehouse of facts. I reposition myself to block her view. There’s no time to try texting Ryan a warning.
I could tell Susannah. Tell her how Ryan has been sneaking around behind her back for over a year, even hooking up with two college juniors in a motel room during one of our out of town meets. But defying the Morgan machine by pointing this out takes too much energy. Instead I blurt, “Did you realize the Watch Hill carousel was once part of a traveling carnival?”
She laughs and shakes her head. “What? Jeremy, sometimes you can be such a--”
But her voice trails off as her gaze wanders past mine, her smile crumpling like a paper bag. I follow her line of sight and I know this is it. The crowd has thinned around Ryan, enough for her to see him with his mouth smashed against Claudia’s.
“Oh, man,” I gasp. I turn to comfort Susannah, but she is already gone.
I stand, dithering; wanting to run after her and apologize for letting her walk into this ambush.
But, no. This is something Ryan needs to take care of. I might have signed on to sweep his mess under the rug, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to clean up after him. I push through the crowd to get to him.
“What? She what? Did you know she was coming back early?”
I feel my face heat. “No.”
Ryan pushes Claudia off of him, his stage makeup still glistening and thick, traces of Claudia’s lipstick smeared on his lips. “Good job, Jeremy. You could have at least texted me.”
My hand curls into a fist. I stuff it in my jacket pocket. “She ran out,” I say. “Maybe you can catch her.”
Ryan shrugs, and without a coat, stalks out of the theater into the night. I wait a few minutes then follow. Susannah’s car is gone, and so is Ryan’s. I try to call Susannah, but she doesn’t pick up.
I get in my car and focus on resisting the water bottle’s siren call, panicked glimpses of my waking nightmare crashing through the floodgates, the terrifying memories swept through with it. The rain and the torrents of water sweeping past, draining into the Gorge, forcing me to remember. To relive it. No. Not now. I need to stay clear.
Since eighth grade, when I discovered that liquor dulls my terrors, I have been a master thief and spy.
Not even Ryan knows.
Just a sip to calm my shaky nerves. One tiny sip to beat back the rising waters that threaten to drown me. I can do it. I pride myself on my steely self-control. My ability to remain stone-cold sober even when the track team holds a victory keg party. They call me Jeremy the Teetotaler. Jeremy, the History Nerd who never partakes.
I snap open the glove compartment. The innocuous silver bottle is shoved behind the owner’s manual, gas receipts and a collection of power bar wrappers. I raise it to my lips and gulp once, twice, three times; the cold liquid igniting as it hits my throat. It takes two, three more gulps to slow my heart to normal speed. The bottle is nearly empty. I cap it and return it to the compartment, warmth flowing to my cold fingers. I’d need to drink three times as much as that to lose focus.
Swerving the deserted black roads slick with rain over ice, I follow my usual running circuit. This is familiar turf. My backyard, practically.
Yes. I can do this. Susannah knows my route so I hope she’s come this way and parked, knowing I’d find her. She wants me to find her. To comfort her. I’ll tell her everything. How I’m sorry for lying to her. For letting Ryan hurt her. And maybe at last she’ll accept that it’s not Ryan she wants, but me.
But there’s no sign of her.
After driving and searching fruitlessly, my mind churning with outcomes, the now driving rain blurring my windshield, I can’t stand it anymore. My heart is racing. Just one last sip to fortify myself is all I need.
When I round the next hairpin curve, my headlights flash on Ryan’s car parked behind Susannah’s, engines running. I squint through the rain and mist and spot them behind the guardrail, illuminated in the headlamps’ cone of light. There’s no shoulder on this side of the road, so I pull over when I can, about twenty yards past them.
When I finally get out of the car I can hear her shouts over the racket the rain makes. My head is buzzing, but my thoughts are clear.
In fact, they’ve never been clearer, as the roots that entangle me fall away.
The damp air smells like freedom.
Susannah screams, and pounds at Ryan’s chest with her fists. He shoves her hard and she falls backward. I don’t see her get up again. Raucous arguments were nothing new between Susannah and Ryan, but I’d never seen him hit her before.
There’s a steep decline into the woods where they’ve chosen to have their argument and I worry Susannah could have gotten hurt. Ryan disappears now, too. What the hell are they doing?
I begin to run at full tilt. I still have some distance to cover, but that’s no problem for me, even with the Absolut pumping heat through my veins. But my boot heel catches on a wet leaf then slides out from under me.
I’m flying, but I land softly.

He smiles, a faint curve of his lips that reveals the barest hint of a long dimple carved in his right cheek. “No, but I can read your expression. And I’ve been doing this long enough that I know what most people tend to think when they first open their eyes.”
“Doing what long enough?”
“This,” he says, and nothing more.
A second of silence stretches into two. Though I can’t see behind his glasses, I have the feeling he’s not looking at me anymore, that he’s scanning the area, looking for…something. But as I stare at him, I see me—tiny distorted reflections of me in the shiny, convex lenses.

Excerpt:

Somewhere, James was just as trapped as I was.

I thought of the morning when we lay with each other, curled against one another, never beginning and never ending. How we’d stayed like that till the sun began to rise.

James had reached down and pulled me off the ground. He wore a satisfied grin on his face. “Someone is mighty proud of himself,” I teased.

He laughed. It bounced through the forest, calling it awake. Readying it for the day. “I’m just insanely happy.”

I stood on the tips of my toes and kissed him gently on his scar. “I’m insanely happy too,” I whispered.

James looked down at me, and I was lost all over again. I would never tire of looking into those mismatched eyes. They didn’t make him different. They made him him. He chuckled as he reached over and pulled a leaf from my tangled hair. “They’ll know just by looking at you that we’ve been up to no good.”

“No good?” I purred. “I thought it was very, very good.”

James growled and lifted me into the air. I wrapped my legs around his waist as he pressed his lips hungrily against mine. I moved my hands to his hair, curling my fingers into it, attaching myself to him. I never wanted to let go. Every part of me ached to be touched by him, and every part of me ached to touch him right back.

“Do you know how much I love you?” he breathed into the base of my neck. His lips fluttered against my skin.

I nodded, kissing the top of his head. “As much as I love you.”

James slowly put my feet back on the ground. He cradled my face in his hands. “That will never change. No matter what.”

I looked deep into his eyes. “I know.” Because I did. It was one of life’s few assurances. I would always love James.

I pressed my lips once again to his scar. “I adore this scar,” I whispered, unable to hide the smile that seemed etched on my face all morning.

“You’re enough to drive a man crazy,” he said The tremble of his voice caused my toes to curl. I wanted him again. And again. And again.

My fingers traced the waist of his pants. “Tonight?” I said, knowing full well it was a promise that I probably wouldn’t be able to keep.

James grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips. “Tonight,” he echoed.

As the sun climb higher into the sky, I knew our moment was coming to an end. James reached down and placed his hand over my heart. “Thank you,” he said.

“For what?” I asked, my voice choked with emotion.

“For everything.”

As the memory slipped away, I looked back up at the night sky. Praying and hoping that James knew how much I wanted to thank him too.

For everything.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on? And will they even be together?
