White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L Armentrout

Title: White Hot Kiss
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Series: The Dark Elements
Pages: 384
Review: 5 Stars!

Before I begin my review, which will involve LOTS of squealing, please note that, while not vital, it is VERY helpful to read the prequel novella Bittersweet Love before reading White Hot Kiss!

White Hot Kiss was AMAZING! I love all of Jennifer L Armentrout's stuff and have been anxiously awaiting this book since it was announced. There are almost no books out there, especially in YA, that have gargoyles in them, but this book mastered them! It was fast-paced, action-packed, and full of swoony moments. I read this book in twenty four hours flat! This book was one of my favorites to date. It's always hard to take on new species, but Jennifer L Armentrout did it well. The other species is demon. Generally, when there are demons, there are also angels. And while they do exist in this world, the main species are the gargoyles and demons!

The main character is Layla. She's half demon, half gargoyle. She has a fairly poor image of herself at the beginning of the book. She believes that demons are evil, and that she doesn't have enough gargoyle in her. She can't use gargoyle powers like others can, but she can steal souls with a kiss, which is highly looked down upon. Over the course of the book, Layla really comes into herself and her abilities, making her confident along with a force to be reckoned with. Layla is witty from page one and a joy to read about!

There are also two male characters, Roth and Zayne. Roth is a demon, and an upper-level demon on at that. According to the author, he's the character that Daemon from her previous novel Obsidian is based off of! Roth is one heck of a bad boy, but I actually like his character a million times more than Daemon. He has an ego the size of Mars, but he doesn't treat Layla horribly, like Daemon sometimes did to Katy. Basically, Roth is made of swoon, kick butt, awesome sauce, and humor, but mostly swoon! The other guy is Zayne. I honestly don't know how readers liked him, because I wanted to strangle him most of the time! I felt he was much better for the best friend role than the love interest one. Maybe that could change in book two, but Roth was the one who was always there for Layla, not  Zayne. Sure, he's hot, and he stands up for Layla when it comes down to it, but he doesn't have much else going for him. My favorite character by far is Bambi. She is a snake tattoo that Roth has that happens to come to life and eat people. If the rest of the review hasn't interested you, that should draw  you in!

The romance in this book felt a little forced at times, but I still really liked it, and think that it evened out as the book went on. True to its title, there are A LOT of swoony scenes in here. This is definitely not for younger readers. I loved this book from chapter one till the end. The romance blows other stuff out the water, and I was swooning the entire time! If you have not read anything by Jennifer L Armentrout, start with this series! This book was amazing and I see many rereads in my future! A full five stars for sure!

Characterize It (8)

Welcome to Characterize It, a meme held every Thursday and hosted by The YA Book Butterfly. It's a weekly meme, each week featuring a different characteristic. Basically, each week, she'll pick a new characteristic and participating bloggers as well as herself will choose a character that fits that description. For more information, look here.

This week's theme is Wild Card - Any character! From any book! Just come up with a favorite!

Hmm... I guess I have to say Anna Whitt from Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins! If you lived in my home, you would know that I have a *slight* Wendy Higgins obsession. As in, I'll randomly go around chanting her name and people will give me crazy looks, including my parents. Anna is kind, sweet, and funny. Anna is a strong character and, luckily, has a bunch of good people in her corner for when the times comes for the final showdown. Plus, she has really good taste in guys. Kaidan is the swooniest of swoony boys. Read the books for proof.

Who's one of your favorite characters?

Waiting On Wednesday (7)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am featuring Panic by Lauren Oliver! I have read her Delirium trilogy, and while I still feel it ended poorly (it needed one more chapter ONE MORE!), I am still blown away by the first book. Supposedly, Panic is a standalone. From what I can tell, it's something of a modern day, slightly less deadly, Hunger Games. The cover looks similar to that of Uninvited by Sophie Jordan, which I am loved to pieces. I am really excited for this book and can't wait to tell you what I think!

Synopsis:

From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver comes an extraordinary novel of fear, friendship, courage, and hope.

Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

Already optioned by Universal Pictures in a major deal, this gritty, spellbinding novel captures both the raw energy of fear mixed with excitement, as well as the aching need to find a place to belong.

Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd

Title: Her Dark Curiosity
Author: Megan Shepherd
Publisher: HarperTeen/Balzer + Bray
Series: The Madman's Daughter
Release: January 28, 2014
Pages: 420
Review: 5 Stars

Okay, I admite that I didn't write up a full review of The Madman's Daughter (book one), so if you missed it, here's my short review from the January Wrap-Up post.

This book was creepy, interesting, and a whole lot more of creepy. Plus, it takes place (partially) in Victorian London. It's a retelling of a classic story, and the sequel, which came out on Tuesday, is as well!

I had actually preordered this book, but it had never arrived at my local indie store because they accidentally ordered the UK edition! I had needed by Thursday night because, guess what, I was going to a signing in which one of the authors was Megan Shepherd! The other three were Robin Constantine, Megan Miranda, and Kasie West (all of whom I love). So, I ended buying the book at the event. Story time, the event was AMAZING! There were two different signings in my area and after the first one, I REALLY wanted to go to the second one, but I was busy the next evening. The authors actually recognized me from twitter (so cool!) and we talked before the even started. I got a total of twelve books signed and will be giving three of them away soon alone with some awesome swag! Story time over.

I was intrigued with The Madman's Daughter, but Her Dark Curiosity really pulled me into Juliets' world. It was so creepy and amazing. This was a retelling of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The main character Juliet really struggles with right and wrong in this book. She sometimes worries she's going mad and wonders whether science is truly good or evil. I love Juliet, I really do, but I had one problem. So, Juliet is into Montgomery, even though, for the longest time, he wasn't into her. Edward likes Juliet and though Juliet returns his affections, she can't admit it, even to herself. Don't get me wrong, I like Montgomery, he's nice, but I will find a way to kill him if I have to because he is currently in the way of my ship! I really like Edward and Juliet together because, even if they don't bring out the best in each other, they bring out the strongest. Montgomery doesn't fully realize the extent of Juliet, constantly underestimates her, and we all know he's lying to her!

The plot was incredibly fast paced and had a million twists and turns. It was one of the few books that I could not predict what was going to happen. There were betrayals left and right, and constant danger. I would not have wanted to be in the characters' shoes. Victorian London is often romanticized in a lot of novels, but this gives you the real deal. The end totally took me by surprise and now I'm dying for the final book! The good, the bad, and the ugly. You will be drawn into the madness. I give it five stars!

This week's theme is The Mr. Darcy - Guy Character that acts standoffish at first....but is sincerely attracted to the girl.

Um... can I just say almost every male protagonist in YA history? *listens* Oh, no, I can't? Well, then... The best character for this role is definitely Jace Wayland Morgernstern Herondale Lightwood.  I mean, come on, Jace is the epitome of jerk at first. Self-absorbed, thinks he knows everything, no girl in their right mind would give Jace a true chance. Except for Clary, who gave him the benefit of the doubt. That might not have been the best move since, now, between the two of them, they have been lied to, locked up more times than I can count, stabbed way too many times, killed, kidnapped, possessed, lied to some more, and heartbroken. BUT, hopefully, it will all work out in the end. Jace shows that he is kind, caring, and truly in love with Clary before the story is over.

Who do you think is the Mr. Darcy of YA?

Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins

Title: Sweet Reckoning
Author: Wendy Higgins
Publisher: HarperTeen
Series: Sweet
Release: April 29, 2014
Pages: 379
Review: 5 STARS!

I thought the first two books in this series were good, but holy bleep, Sweet Reckoning blew the socks off of the first two books! I got the ARC from The Regulator Bookstore Wednesday afternoon and finished it the next morning. My journey of reading Sweet Reckoning can be viewed via tweet, starting here:

A few chapters in, I found this! I'd been told there would be one after finding the Sweet Evil reference in Origin, and was happy to spot it.

And then, I about died after reading page 53.

I was like, whoa, this did not just happen! And then, chapter 17 came around and the swooning began in full force.

And then, I finished Sweet Reckoning. I was sad it was over, but I loved it so much. I'm planning a full reread of the series as soon as I can!

Okay, I think that's all the tweets. Woo *wipes brow* Seriously though, Sweet Reckoning was amazing. I had so many theories about how the series would end, and I don't think a thing happened the way I expected it to. I'm fairly good at seeing plot twists and the like, but this caught me completely off guard. Wendy found loopholes in all the right places. Unlike a lot of other series enders, Sweet Reckoning had a nice amount of exposition. It didn't hit the climax and then have one teeny weeny chapter to wrap it up. I am happy to say that I got full closure from the ending given!

My heart hurts for the characters. I don't want to spoil it, but let's just say that Wendy is BRUTAL to them in this book, Anna especially. To be fair, there are some amazing moments mixed in. I was laughing my head off all the time while reading this. All the characters hit new highs and new lows. Their willpower is put to the test, and they pass with flying colors. There was at least one character who I hated at the beginning of the story and loved by the end. Anna really found herself in this book, and I love her more than ever. And if you look up, you see that Kai definitely has a place in my heart.

Like with the previous books, Sweet Reckoning has a prologue and an epilogue. Both provided some really cool insight, and honestly, the epilogue was very near perfect. I'm the kind of reader that loves pretty bow on top of a story, and Wendy did it perfectly! The action was constant and the romance beyond scorching. There were a couple awkward moments for the reader and the characters, but they always got past it. The characters all came full circle and I believe just about every plot point was wrapped up. There were no loose ends, which was REALLY nice. Sorry this can't be more in depth, but I REALLY don't want to spoil it! A perfect series ender that will go down in the history books! Five stars for sure!

P.S. Wendy Higgins might be my favorite nonexistent word in the dictionary!

This week's theme is the big black hole-the character with so many depths/emotions that you need a shovel!

Okay, I really hope this isn't female only. Why? Because the easy winner of this category is Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. His character has so much depth and he goes through so much change, it's unbelievable. I can't even put it in words. He pushes everyone away because he believes that he's cursed. He doesn't admit his love for the main character Tessa, and by the time he does, it's too late. His hate of ducks. He left his family after his sister died, but he still loves them. His best friend is dying. He wants to do the right thing, but constantly screws up, etc, etc. Oh, and did I mention it's set in Victorian London? Well, it is! So, Will all the way! Also, tomorrow being Valentine's Day, I can't help but say that Will is one of my top literary crushes!

Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi

Title: Ignite Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Publisher: HarperTeen
Series: Shatter Me
Release: February 4, 2014
Pages: 408
Review: 5 Stars

Ignite Me was amazing! A perfect ending to a perfect series. After months of bad endings, the prospects are starting to look up, which is proven by Ignite Me. The plot is beautiful, the characters done well, and the world magnificent.

The main character is Juliette. Her touch kills for cryin out loud! In book one, Juliette was quiet, meek, and all around weak-hearted. By Ignite Me, Juliette is ANGRY! She is ready to kick butt, and no one's getting in her way! Juliette is not afraid anymore and it's amazing. Suddenly, all the things she's only dreamed of are within sight. There are a couple awkward moments that I cringed at, but beyond that, her interactions with the other characters is strong. My favorite character is quite possibly Kenji. He is the comic relief of the series. Kenji is also kind but stubborn. He's Juliette's best friend, and when she says 'I can't' he says 'Yes you can'. A note on the love triangle. Up until this point I was solid Team Adam but Ignite Me turned me. I am now definitely Team Warner. You honestly don't get just how wonderful and sometimes broken he is until this book.

This book was perfectly done. The action was nonstop and the romance was scorcing. Seriously, I'm blushing just thinking about it. I can't even accurately express the perfectness of this ending. How the characters decided to deal with the problem was risky and made for a lot of kick butt time. Juliette didn't take no for an answer. The language that Tahereh chooses to use in the book is beautiful. The writing is similar to that of The Book Thief. It's so poetic and fun to read. Unlike the first book, in Ignite Me, there are no cross outs. The tagline 'Fear will learn to fear me' is perfect for the book, the cover is beautiful and the book shattered expectations. Ignite Me was amazing and deserves a full five stars.

Rush by Eve Silver

Title: Rush
Author: Eve Silver
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release: June 11, 2013
Series: The Game
Pages: 368
Review: 4.5 Stars

I have owned this book for a while now and finally read it last week. I've wanted to read it for ages, but never have. So, I read it. And it ROCKED! I thought it was going to be some dystopian/sci-fi game like the movie Spy Kids 3. I was not expecting the characters to be pulled through time and space to fight aliens! The book starts off with a bang, with the first major plot point only a few pages into the book.

The main character is Miki Jones. Only a few pages in, Miki is hit by a truck and is transported into 'The Game'. Miki starts out a bit overconfident, but she quickly realizes just how life and death the 'Game' truly is. Miki soon goes from overconfidence to fear and confusion. She doesn't understand what exactly the game is, only that it puts her and her friends in danger. Miki also meets Jackson. He's the leader of their 'team' in the game, though he's constantly insisting that they aren't a team. From the first page he's on, the reader knows that Jackson has secrets. For one thing, he's always wearing sunglasses. Jackson is truly swoon worthy. He's mysterious and hot and cold with Miki. His character arc is one that is truly interesting and heartbreaking at times.

The plot was incredibly fast. It started on page one and didn't end until the last line. The climax happened closer to the end than I would have liked, but it made for an incredible cliffhanger. The romance truly does build in this book. It's not some sort of insta-love. There is major tension between the characters and I love their banter. I truly felt like I was in the story. It took me a little while to read the book, but it was definitely worth it. The sequel, Push, comes out this summer and I can't wait for it! If you have the chance, definitely pick up this book. It's different and definitely original. 4.5 stars.

Character Interview

Rebekah: Did you expect to survive the outbreak?

Preston: In the beginning, I thought I’d make it through without a doubt. In the middle of it, there were times I wasn’t sure I’d make it one more hour let alone to the end of the outbreak…But I never imagined that I would live through the outbreak, only to have my family ripped away from me. I mean we were told it was safe again. And then I found out there were others experiencing the same thing.

Rebekah: Meeting you came at the right time. I was as low as I’d ever been. I felt so alone after my husband was killed and no one would believe me, what I saw. I thank you for giving me a chance to tell my story.

Preston: Our truths need to be heard. What about you? Did you expect survive the outbreak?

Rebekah: Depended on the day. When Gavin and I were in the middle of the forest, creating our own world, I thought it was a possibility. But the moment we’d get near a city, I wasn’t so sure. Seeing the horrors and the devastation, it made it hard to believe there was a way out. Do you think our world will ever be the same?

Preston: No. I think that innocence is lost, and I don’t know that it can ever exist until a new generation is born. Man, that sounds depressing, doesn’t it?

Rebekah: It sounds truthful.

Preston: I’m grateful I have you on my side, Rebekah.

Rebekah: I feel the same way about you, like anything is possible in the Afterworld.
