Giveaway: Best Series Blog Hop

I totally did not forget that I had to post this. Definitely not....

This blog hop is hosted by Cuddlebuggery Book Blog! There are a bunch of stops, and each stop is giving away a book or books that are part of one of their favorite series! I am giving away a copy of The Liberator by Victoria Scott, the second book in the Dante Walker trilogy!

You can find my review of the first book, The Collector, here, and The Liberator, here!

These books are loads of fun, and guess what, the final book in the trilogy, The Warrior, comes out soon! I know I'm super excited for it!

Do these books NOT look awesome? Trust me, they are. Plus, they're one of the few books (that I read at least) that have a male narrator. Dante starts of pretty much as an anti-hero, but you really grow to love him over the course of the books!

Author Bio:
I’m a teen fiction writer with a die-hard affection for dark and humorous books. My work is represented by Sara Crowe of Harvey Klinger literary agency. I have a master’s degree in marketing, and currently live in Dallas with my husband, Ryan.

My first series started with THE COLLECTOR, and was published by Entangled Teen in April 2013. The second book in the trilogy, THE LIBERATOR, will release August 2013. My next series kicks off with FIRE & FLOOD and is being published by Scholastic, February 2014.

Synopsis:

The Collector

Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence have made him one of Hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple: weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal-opportunity collector and doesn’t want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:
Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within ten days.

Dante doesn’t know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of Hell. But after Dante meets the quirky Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect, he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector…and uncover emotions deeply buried.

The Liberator

Dante has a shiny new cuff wrapped around his ankle, and he doesn’t like that mess one bit. His new accessory comes straight from Big Guy himself and marks the former demon as a liberator. Despite his gritty past and bad boy ways, Dante Walker has been granted a second chance.

When Dante is given his first mission as a liberator to save the soul of seventeen-year-old Aspen, he knows he’s got this. But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations. Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

The Warrior

War between heaven and hell is coming, but Dante Walker makes it look damn good.

Dante’s girlfriend, Charlie, is fated to save the world. And Aspen, the girl who feels like a sister, is an ordained soldier. In order to help both fulfill their destiny and win the war, Dante must complete liberator training at the Hive, rescue Aspen from hell, and uncover a message hidden on an ancient scroll.

Dante is built for battle, but even he can’t handle the nightmares where spiders crawl from Aspen’s eyes, or the look on Charlie’s face that foretells of devastation. To make matters worse, the enemy seizes every opportunity to break inside the Hive and cripple the liberators. But the day of reckoning is fast approaching, and to stand victorious, Dante will have to embrace something inside himself he never has before—faith.

See Me by Wendy Higgins

Title: See Me
Author: Wendy Higgins
Release: March 17, 2014
Publisher: Self-Published
Series: Standalone
Pages: 314
Review: 5 Stars

Ever since Wendy announced this book, I have been anxiously awaiting it. Like some of you may know, See Me is self-published. Wendy's first self-published book, in fact. She had planned to release it last October, but couldn't figure out what was up with the story. Eventually, she figured it out, and she released it on St. Patrick's Day! I got the book as soon as I could and devoured every word! Sadly, my copy was trampled and the cover partially torn off, so I do not have physical proof, but I should be getting a new copy soon!

The main character is Robyn. She is incredibly spunky and was raised within a family that knows that magic exists. In fact, she's known her entire life that, when she's eighteen, she'll be married off to the son of the head of a magical clan in Ireland, named McKale. What she doesn't know, is that he happens to be a leprechaun. As far as whether she cares for McKale or not, there is no doubt. She's dreamed of meeting him since she was a little girl. Robyn sometimes talks before she thinks, which makes some conversations awkward, but her character more relatable.

For a good portion of the book, I wanted to strangle McKale. I know he was being controlled by magic and all that good stuff, but don't kiss someone else and then expect Robyn to come running back to you. She's too good for that, and she knows it. McKale can't seem to get it through his head that Robyn actually cares about him. He always sees himself as the odd one out. And while he others do think that he's a bit odd, his entire clan loves him.

The plot of the book was fast. Heck, I read this in under 24 hours! I would have read it faster if not for the need of sleep and school. Still, I gobbled it up. It was fun and far exceeded my expectations (which were already pretty high after reading Wendy's Sweet Evil trilogy). Wendy is an excellent story teller and I love the romance. This is a standalone story, which already makes it unique, but the leprechauns make it even more special! Please, go out and get this book, I give it five stars!

Characterize It (12)

Welcome to Characterize It, a meme held every Thursday and hosted by The YA Book Butterfly. It's a weekly meme, each week featuring a different characteristic. Basically, each week, she'll pick a new characteristic and participating bloggers as well as herself will choose a character that fits that description. For more information, look here.

This week's theme is wild card, pick any character as long as they're a favorite!

Okay everyone, I think this one was kinda inevitable. You may not know this, but I am a huge Rick Riordan fan. Specifically, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series! So, this week's pick is Percy Jackson! He is funny, interesting, and an all-around amazing character. Plus, if you add Annabeth into the equation, it just becomes more perfect! If you haven't already, read this series. You won't regret it. Also, the chapter names are hilarious. Examples: I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher, We Get Advice From a Poodle, Demon Pigeons Attack, Clarisse Blows Up Everything, I Go Snowboarding With a Pig, I Have a Dam Problem, I Battle the Cheerleading Squad, I Scoop Poop, I Drive My Dog Into a Tree, and Pigs Fly. Plus, there are the epic first liners. Those are slightly spoilery though, so I won't post them. Basically, Percy is amazing and you should read all about him!

Waiting On Wednesday (11)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick is Toxic Heart by Theo Lawrence! I read Mystic City back when it came out in October of 2012. 2012! Toxic Heart was originally set to be released last July, but that didn't happen. Mystic City was REALLY good, and after waiting for such a long time, I am ecstatic for this book! And let me tell you, I won't just be kinda disappointed if the book stinks, I *might* be end-of-the-world disappointed. Because when you've been waiting for a YEAR AND A HALF you want a good book. That said, it has an amazing premise, and I can't wait to read it!

Synopsis:

A city in flames. A trust betrayed. A perfect love destroyed.

Has Aria lost Hunter, her one true love?

Ever since rebellion broke out in Mystic City, pitting the ruling elite against the magic-wielding mystics, Aria has barely seen her boyfriend. Not surprising, since Hunter is the leader of the mystic uprising, and he'll do whatever it takes to win freedom for his people—even if that means using Aria.

But Aria is no one's pawn. She believes she can bring the two warring sides together, save the city, and win back the Hunter she fell in love with.

Before she can play peacemaker, though, Aria will need to find the missing heart of a dead mystic. The heart gives untold powers to whoever possesses it, but finding it means seeking out a fierce enemy whose deepest desire is for Aria to be gone—forever.

The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski

Title: The Winner's Curse
Author: Marie Rutkoski
Publisher: Macmillan
Release: March 4, 2014
Series: The Winner's
Pages: 355
Review: 5 Stars

Looking at my list of books, I realized that I haven't reviewed many books this month. Partially because for the first half of the month, I was in a horrible reading slump. One word: ugh. I simply could not read. Last week, I got back on the boat, and have read six books, and I've only reviewed one of them. I loved them all, and feel that I am breaking my New Year's resolution to review more. So, here I am, reviewing The Winner's Curse!

I'd been hearing a lot about this book, but had never been truly interested. Finally, a little after its release, I thought to myself, enough is enough. EVERYONE is saying how amazing this book is, so I must read it to see if it is true. Hence, I got a copy from the library and OH MY GOD, WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE! I can't believe that I didn't pick up The Winner's Curse sooner. I started it at school, but didn't get much read. So that evening, I started reading what I promised myself would be one chapter, but ended up staying up way too late (like, until the next morning), to finish the book.

The book is dual POV between Kestrel, a rich girl who's father is the head of the military, and Arin, a slave with a secret. I liked Kestrel from page one. She was headstrong and did not bow to the views of her people. She has been told that within the next few years, she can either marry or join the military, neither of which Kestrel wants to do. Kestrel is shrewd, and easily makes plans to avoid this as long as possible. It is really fun to be in Kestrels' head, and I love her character. She's intelligent, and sees things long before others do, but in a few ways, ways that bite her in the butt, she is naive.

Arin is really something. I like his character, that's for sure, but grr, he keeps SO many secrets! And these secrets end up causing a ginormous rift between him and Kestrel, a rift I do not like. Arin has much more brute strength than Kestrel, and is willing to do things others aren't, but can also be easily persuaded into doing the wrong thing. I admire Arin's loyalty, as well as the times when his kindness shines past his stoic exterior.

The plot in this book is fast, yet not fast enough. For a large chunk of the book, I'm being surrounded by action and plot, yet the reader is waiting for a few key moments. And then suddenly, those moments have passed and things are blowing up! The book was really fun to read, and I am dying for the second book! Readers of Legend by Marie Lu would definitely enjoy The Winner's Curse. This book surpassed my expectations and I give it a full five stars!

Characterize It (11)

Welcome to Characterize It, a meme held every Thursday and hosted by The YA Book Butterfly. It's a weekly meme, each week featuring a different characteristic. Basically, each week, she'll pick a new characteristic and participating bloggers as well as herself will choose a character that fits that description. For more information, look here.

This week's theme is strong female secondary character who helps the lead female through adversary.

Oh, this one's a toughie! *looks at bookshelves* Got it! I pick Aphrodite from the House of Night series by P.C. and Kristen Cast. In the beginning of the story, Aphrodite is the mean girl to beat all mean girls. She isn't actually all that strong at first, but grows stronger. Over time, the main character, Zoey, realizes that Aphrodite isn't as bad as she once thought. Aphrodite doesn't sugarcoat things, which is very helpful. First, she is an adversary that Zoey feels the need to beat and, eventually, a friend.

Which character would you pick for this role?

Waiting On Wednesday (10)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I am featuring Dear Killer by Katherine Ewell. It looks delightfully insane, and filled with madness! There is no doubt in my mind that the main character is insane. At the same time, I believe that there will be more to the story than meets the eye. It definitely looks interesting. I'm not a horror fan, but I definitely like some occasionally gruesome YA (you did see my last WoW post, right?). So yes, I am very excited for Dear Killer!

Synopsis:

Rule One: Nothing is right, nothing is wrong.
Rule Two: Be careful.
Rule Three: Fight using your legs whenever possible, because they're the strongest part of your body.
Rule Four: Hit to kill. The first blow should be the last, if at all possible.
Rule Five: The letters are the law.

Kit takes her role as London's notorious "Perfect Killer" seriously. The letters and cash that come to her via a secret mailbox are not a game; choosing who to kill is not an impulse decision. Every letter she receives begins with "Dear Killer," and every time Kit murders, she leaves a letter with the dead body. Her moral nihilism and thus her murders are a way of life—the only way of life she has ever known.

But when a letter appears in the mailbox that will have the power to topple Kit's convictions as perfectly as she commits her murders, she must make a decision: follow the only rules she has ever known, or challenge Rule One and go from there.

Katherine's Ewell's Dear Killer is a sinister psychological thriller that explores the thin line between good and evil and the messiness of that inevitable moment when life contradicts everything you believe.

Blog Tour: Evanescent by Sara V Zook and Wendy S Chartier

I'm so happy to be part of the Evanescent tour! As you may or may not know, I am the organizer of Sara's street team, the Fantasy Fanatics! Today, I present to you, my review of the book as well as an excerpt from the book (which I read in an evening btw). After the review, you will find an excerpt from the novel as well as an awesome giveaway!

So, I might have read the entire book while waiting to get into a restaurant for my dad's birthday. Yes, the wait was two hours, but STILL! This book was SO good! I started reading it, finished it at the dinner table, and was done before our food arrived. The characters drew me in, and while I want a tad more detail, otherwise, the book couldn't have been more perfect!

While the book was told from many points of view, the main character was Sarenah. Sarenah knew from page one that she wasn't human, heck, she'd been an angel, and a special one at that, for a few thousand years! That's right, Sarenah's an angel, and a kick-butt one at that! She's always done what she's told, but after the events at the beginning of the story, she starts to step out of the carefully lined box that she's lived in all her life. Sarenah was definitely a fun main character, and even though she had years of being supernatural under her belt, it still felt as if she was discovering herself.

The plot of this book was FAST! Something new was always happening, and I couldn't stop turning pages. The backstory of the characters was really interesting, and I honestly did not see it coming. The writing was superb! I loved being immersed in this story and can't wait for the next book. The surprises kept coming and coming, and by the end, my jaw was nearly on the floor in shock. Plus, the male protagonist Draco? Complete and utter swoon! Definitely check out this book, it is worth the read! I can't not give this book five stars!

Blog Hop: Many Sides of Medusa

Thank you for stopping by the Many Sides of Medusa Blog Hop hosted by Heather Lyons and Kelly Hashway!

Door Prize: Your door prize for joining us is the short story prequel to the Touch of Death series titled Curse of Death. It's the myth about Medusa and how she was cursed by the goddess Athena. Claim your free gift by clicking here.

Heather and Kelly are teaming up to show you a very different side of Medusa. Forget the monster you might think she was, and check out these excerpts from The Deep End of the Sea and Touch of Death. You just might change your mind about Medusa.

Excerpt:

But there’s no way around it. I am, in fact, a monster. A hideous one, to be precise, but as I don’t have any mirrors on Gorgóna, I can’t verify that one for certain. I rely on the fact that every single person I’ve frozen over the ages boasts abject fear on their face, which makes me believe they find me pretty horrifying. And it sucks. It genuinely, truly, absolutely, unequivocally sucks. I hate stealing lives.

Thus, not only am I a monster, I’m a really lousy one. A lonely, classic Five Stages of Grief following, insecure, shut-in of a pathetic beast who talks to the snakes on her head and the statues on her island.

Excerpt:

My hair blew up, flying wildly all around me. My blood bubbled in my veins like boiling water, but it didn't hurt. It was the feeling of power. Too much power. My body felt like it was going to burst. Still I held on. My eyes closed, and I threw my head back. An imaged filled my mind. Medusa. Her snakes wriggled their bodies at me, flicking their tongues. Chills ran down the backs of my legs, but I forced my eyes away from the snakes. Lower. To Medusa's face. She smiled at me. Her face and eyes filled with warmth. She looked like…Mom.

All That Glows by Ryan Graudin

Title: All That Glows
Author: Ryan Graudin
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release: February 4, 2014
Pages: 463
Review: 5 Stars

First and foremost, I love books about faeries. They are the bestest thing ever. And second, an apology to Ryan Graudin. Why? Because when I first heard about the book, and right up until I'd finished chapter one, I thought she was also Lesley Livingston, author of A Wondrous Strange and that All That Glows was a spin-off novel. To be fair, the covers are VERY similar! ANYWAYS, once I straightened that out, I dug in. In fact, I read the entire book this afternoon. Considering it took me a week each to read the last two books I've read (major reading slump), that is a big accomplishment along with a REALLY GOOD THING! This book drew me in and wouldn't let me go. Trust me, I haven't done anything BUT read this book since I started it!

The main character is Emrys and she is awesome! I love books where the main character knows about the supernatural stuff before page one (ex. Throne of Glass, Vampire Academy, Half-Blood, and Anna Dressed in Blood). It eliminates the many chapters, and sometimes entire novel, where the main character is stuck denying, and eventually accepting, his or her magical abilities. Emrys knows she's a faery, it would be bad if she didn't, considering that she's hundreds of years old. Also, it's really awesome that she's the old one here, instead of the guy. The guy is generally the one who comes into the girls' life starts the chain reaction. Instead, Emrys tells the guy about magic, and while he's going through the stages of acceptance, Emrys can go out and be kick-butt. Emrys is confident in herself. I loved reading from her point of view.

While the romance in the book didn't take forever, it wasn't insta-love either, which I really liked. There was that instant spark/attraction/thing that's totally okay. The characters didn't get it, and weren't professing feelings for each other until about halfway through the book. They fell in love slowly, which was really nice. The plot was amazingly fast, and while I suspected part of the end, others still came as a big surprise! Also, I'm pretty sure this book is a standalone. And as much as I want more of this world, I loved the ending and don't know if I can stand to see the characters go through more trouble. A novella that takes place two years in the future would be totally different and totally okay, of course! (hint hint, wink wink) The ending of the book deviated from the typical ending, and was super cool to see. Trust me, you will love this book. Great for fans of Julie Kagawas' The Iron Fey and Lesley Livingstons' A Wondrous Strange, I give this book five stars!

Jade never thought she’d embrace being a werewolf, but after having accepted her new role as alpha female of Dog Mountain’s pack, she finds herself doing just that. She’s training with the enforcers and learning to use the alpha within her to her advantage. And for the most part, Jade is content, well at least with her training she is.

But Dog Mountain is a small town with big problems. The new alpha pair is divided, splitting the already unstable pack with them, and to make matters worse, Jade’s father is on his way home. Except Jade’s father and his twisted pack of werecourgars aren’t the only threat.

When Aidan brings in a new set of enforcers to weed out the problems within the pack, Jade is forced to delve into the center of the issue. She soon realizes that she is the indirect cause of the uneasiness within the pack, and if Jade doesn’t fix it, she’ll lose everything, even Aidan.

Teaser:

“Does it hurt?” I asked, and then swallowed hard. I lifted my hand and dabbed at the blood, wiping it away as best I could. “I hope it does. You’ve ruined everything.” Even though I said the words, they held no meaning. My voice was weak, straining against an onslaught of emotion blooming within my chest.
“No,” he grunted. “It’s already healed.” He grabbed my wrist, holding my shaking hand still. “I did what was needed. You’re not staying here any longer, Jade. This little game you’re playing ends now. I’m taking you home, where you belong.”
I clucked my tongue and dropped my gaze. More butterflies surfaced in my belly and I breathed, “This is where I belong.”
“Look me in the eyes and tell me that,” he said. When I didn’t lift my head he chuckled, a deep rumble that turned my knees to mush. “You can’t, can you?”

Cover Reveal: Perfect For You by Ashelyn Drake

Title: Perfect for You
Author: Ashelyn Drake
Release: September 2014
Publisher: Swoon Romance

Synopsis:

Sophomore year in high school comes with its own set of problems. You're no longer a freshmen, but you're still two years away from ruling the school. So, you sit and languish in a kind of purgatory until junior year, when things start to get interesting.

That is, unless during your sophomore year, you find your boyfriend making out with another girl in front of your locker. Then, interesting takes on a whole new meaning, and that's what happened to seventeen-year-old Meg Flannigan. It's no wonder her self-esteem suffered a major hit.

Now a senior, Meg catches the eye of not one, but two guys at school (I know, right?). They happen to both be gorgeous, and each vies for her attention in the most flattering of ways. Sounds good, right? Not if one of the guys is her boyfriend, and the other one wants to be.

Meg doesn’t want to lose Ash. They’ve been together for almost five months, and she’s falling in love with him. But Noah. Ah, Noah. He’s the irresistible guy Meg has been crushing on for two years, and she isn’t ready to send him away either. But stringing both along could have disastrous results, leaving Meg in the cold once again.

One thing's certain. Meg needs to decide between Ash and Noah soon, or she'll lose her perfect match forever.

PERFECT FOR YOU was released previously as two novellas. Ashleyn wanted to give her readers more, and has decided to write an entire novel based around Meg's story

Characterize It (10)

Welcome to Characterize It, a meme held every Thursday and hosted by The YA Book Butterfly. It's a weekly meme, each week featuring a different characteristic. Basically, each week, she'll pick a new characteristic and participating bloggers as well as herself will choose a character that fits that description. For more information, look here.

This week's theme is character who lives in/goes to another country.

This is one of those categories that YA is certainly lacking. Most books take place within the US, and occasionally the UK. There are a few books that are qualified for this (The Fault in Our Stars, Emblaze by Jessica Shirvington, A Darkness Strange and Lovely) but I feel that two series take the cake. First is the Revenants series with the main character Kate. She grew up in the US, but after her parents died, she and her older sister moved to Paris with their grandparents. In this series, all except for a couple chapters take place in France. The second series is The Lunar Chronicles. The main character Cinder grew up in the Easter Commonwealth, AKA Asia, and Scarlet grew up in France. So far, not a single scene has taken place in the US, which is really cool. In fact, a lot of it takes place in outer space! So, my final answer is Kate from the Revenants series by Amy Plum and Cinder from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer!
