Zero Repeat Forever by G.S. Prendergast

Title: Zero Repeat Forever
Author: G.S. Prendergast
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Series: Nahx Invasions
Release: August 29, 2017
Pages: 496

Synopsis:

He has no voice, or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn’t know the details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.

Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.

His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.

Until a human kills her…

Sixteen year-old Raven is at summer camp when the terrifying armored Nahx invade, annihilating entire cities, taking control of the Earth. Isolated in the wilderness, Raven and her friends have only a fragment of instruction from the human resistance.

Shelter in place.

Which seems like good advice at first. Stay put. Await rescue. Raven doesn’t like feeling helpless but what choice does she have?

Then a Nahx kills her boyfriend.

Thrown together in a violent, unfamiliar world, Eighth and Raven should feel only hate and fear. But when Raven is injured, and Eighth deserts his unit, their survival depends on trusting each other…

First Impressions

I remember hearing about this book when it came out, but I pushed it aside. Then this past August I was at the bookstore and saw Zero Repeat Forever on the shelf. I picked it up because the cover was pretty and realized that the plot was exactly what I like. It's basically the plot of a Paranormal Romance except it's sci-fi. While I was excited about the plot, the romance was what dragged me in.

Characters

There are two main characters in Zero Repeat Forever. One character changes names partway through the book, so I will use the name used in the first half. The two protagonists are Raven and Eighth. Raven takes up more of the story since she's the only one that's truly able to think for herself. Raven is a troubled teen who's at summer camp when the alien invasion begins. Eighth is one of the aliens, or Nahx, that is doing the invading. They spend the first part of the book separate from each other, but you can tell that they are in a relatively close area of each other. From the moment I met the two characters I super shipped them. They begin their interactions hating each other, but I just wanted to stick their faces together and say 'kiss'. I liked the slow-burn aspect of the romance though, and I can't wait to see it come to fruition in the sequel Cold Falling White.

World Building

Zero Repeat Forever takes place in our world, but at times you wouldn't be able to tell. Also, it takes place in Canada instead of in the US like many YA books. The books are set in the Rocky Mountains, which becomes important to the plot partway through. It was interesting to see how the aspects of survival changed in a rural mountain landscape vs the cityscape we often see. There's also the world building of the Nahx invasion itself. From the beginning I had a prediction about a few of the aspects of the world, and I was more or less proved right by the end. That said, these haven't been developed much, so I can't wait to see what happens with them in book two.

Excerpt:

At some point, I must have fallen asleep.

I say that for two reasons. First, my chin was wet with drool, and I hardly ever slobber on myself when I’m awake. And second, I was no longer on Earth.

I sat bolt upright and stared out the window as distant stars whizzed past in a blur. There were no planets in sight, and judging by the swirling purple nebula ahead of me, this wasn’t the way to Nana’s house. I checked the navigation screen and felt my mouth drop open. The flashing beacon that represented my ship was halfway between Earth and Fasti.

(So you see, it is totally possible to steal a spaceship on accident.)

I guess my hand hit the EXECUTE button when I fell asleep. And because it would take just as long for me to turn around and go home as it would to finish my journey, it made sense to keep going, right? Either way, my parents would ground me into the afterlife, so I might as well earn the sentence, right?

Right.

An electric thrill rushed through my veins when I thought about the possibilities that lay ahead of me. Anything could happen on this trip. Literally anything. I could discover a brand-new element. Or meet a secret race of aliens. Or invent a new energy source. Or eat so much chocolate that I puked. Either way, I had complete freedom to make this journey into whatever I wanted, and once I realized that, there was no freaking way I could turn back. It was like the universe had dropped a gift in my lap, a gift I had no intention of returning.

I wiped the drool off my chin and smiled.

“Hold onto your stars, Fasti. Here I come.”

Waiting on Wednesday (134)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am excited for Kiss Collector by Wendy Higgins! I absolutely adored her Sweet Evil series, and this feels like it's in the same vein, only contemporary. The main plot is simple enough. The main character Zae has had it with romance and wants all the kisses she can get. But a simple bet with her friends about who can kiss the most guys over spring break quickly goes awry. I am expecting fun times, good friends, and a flirty romance with this book. If it's anything like Wendy Higgins' previous novels, it will surely deliver!

Synopsis:

When seventeen-year-old Zae Monroe gets cheated on by the only guy she’s ever loved, then watches her parents' marriage crumble, she decides to forget about relationships and turn the tables on the boys of the world. It’s time to take what she wants, and what she wants are kisses. Athletes, musicians, poets, and bad boys—their lips are all on her agenda, and it's time to collect.

Zae proposes a contest with her friends to see who can kiss the most boys during spring break. But what starts as a harmless competition leads to a downward spiral she can’t seem to break free of. As family, academic, friend, and guy drama come to a head, Zae is forced to face the reasons behind her boy angst, and starts to wonder if she was wrong about the male race...or at least some of them.

Waiting on Wednesday (133)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am excited for Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare! I have read all of the books in her Shadowhunter world, and I can't wait to see how this series ends! I have a feeling that it will rip my heart out and tear it to shreds, but I bet it will be worth it. I'm really hoping Julian and Emma both turn out relatively okay. I'm also curious to see what happens with the Mark/Kieran/Christina situation. I also can't wait to see Ty and Kit's relationship develop. They're young now, but I bet it will really flourish in The Wicked Powers. I really hope we get to see the origins of the parabatai curse as well. I'm also super excited, because Cassandra Clare is coming to my area on tour. I already bought a ticket, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to go since it's on the first day of my exams.

Synopsis:

What if damnation is the price of true love?

Innocent blood has been spilled on the steps of the Council Hall, the sacred stronghold of the Shadowhunters. In the wake of the tragic death of Livia Blackthorn, the Clave teeters on the brink of civil war. One fragment of the Blackthorn family flees to Los Angeles, seeking to discover the source of the blight that is destroying the race of warlocks.

Meanwhile, Julian and Emma take desperate measures to put their forbidden love aside and undertake a perilous mission to Faerie to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead. What they find in the Courts is a secret that may tear the Shadow World asunder and open a dark path into a future they could never have imagined. Caught in a race against time, Emma and Julian must save the world of Shadowhunters before the deadly power of the parabatai curse destroys them and everyone they love.

Waiting on Wednesday (132)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm excited for Outrun the Wind by Elizabeth Tammi. The first thing that drew me in about this book was definitely the cover. They say don't judge a book by its cover, but I am a sucker for pretty covers. As you can probably guess by my previous WoW picks. I just read the description in full for the first time, and I am suddenly even more excited for this book. I knew it was a fantasy and had to do with the Huntresses of Artemis, but that was about it. Now I know it's about a *lesbian* Huntress of Artemis who saves and proceeds to fall in love with Atalanta. Let me tell you right now, I bet this book is going to be amazing! I definitely can't wait to read it!

Synopsis:

The Huntresses of Artemis must obey two rules: never disobey the goddess, and never fall in love. After being rescued from a harrowing life as an Oracle of Delphi, Kahina is glad to be a part of the Hunt; living among a group of female warriors gives her a chance to reclaim her strength, even while her prophetic powers linger. But when a routine mission goes awry, Kahina breaks the first rule in order to save the legendary huntress Atalanta.

To earn back Artemis’s favor, Kahina must complete a dangerous task in the kingdom of Arkadia— where the king’s daughter is revealed to be none other than Atalanta. Still reeling from her disastrous quest and her father’s insistence on marriage, Atalanta isn’t sure what to make of Kahina. As her connection to Atalanta deepens, Kahina finds herself in danger of breaking Artemis’ second rule.

She helps Atalanta devise a dangerous game to avoid marriage, and word spreads throughout Greece, attracting suitors willing to tempt fate to go up against Atalanta in a race for her hand. But when the men responsible for both the girls’ dark pasts arrive, the game turns deadly.

Waiting on Wednesday (131)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am incredibly excited for The Reckoning of Noah Shaw by Michelle Hodkin. I don't think I can put into words just how excited I am. I have been reading the Mara Dyer series since it first came out, and I absolutely like this story,  this world, and these characters! Michelle Hodkin is a goddess with words, so I know this book will be amazing. The Becoming of Noah Shaw ended with a huge cliffhanger, and really left his and Mara's relationship up in the air. In that Noah learned Mara has murdered a lot more people than she says she has. To be fair, I'm a big fan of the murdery Mara sweet Noah combination, but she *might* need to learn to control her murderyness a little bit. I also would love to learn more about Mara's grandmother and the possibly evil guy that's trying to lure all these superpowered teens to his secret group. Basically, I plan to devour this book in one sitting. One other aspect I like is reading a book where the main character has depression, but that isn't the main point of the plot. That's always something I'm looking for more of in the YA book world. But more than anything else, I just want Noah and Mara to have a happy ending.

Synopsis:

Noah Shaw doesn’t think he needs his father’s inheritance.
He does.

Noah believes there’s something off about the suicides in his visions.
There is.

Noah is convinced that he still knows the real Mara Dyer.
He does not.

Everyone thought the nightmare had ended with Mara Dyer’s memoirs, but it was only the beginning. As old skeletons are laid bare, alliances will be tested, hearts will be broken, and no one will be left unscarred.
