Quarantine Releases (95)

There are *so many* amazing books coming out today! We have some of the first new releases for Pride Month, which means that many of these books are delightfully queer! Speaking of queer books, I just finished reading an ARC of upcoming fantasy Moon Dark Smile by Tessa Gratton and it was amazing! I highly recommend reading it when it comes out in August!

Young Adult

Empress Crowned in Read by Ciannon Smart

Perfect for fans of Sabaa Tahir and Claire Legrand, the highly-anticipated sequel to Witches Steeped in Gold finds rival witches Jazmyne and Iraya in an alliance that hangs by a thread, with a brand-new enemy on the horizon.

The Doyenne is dead, and the throne is empty.

Iraya, her revenge taken and magic unfettered, turns her sights on a bigger goal: freeing Aiyca for the Obeah. But first she must shed the guise of the rogue warrior and become the Lost Empress her people need.

Jazmyne has crowned herself the doyenne and is prepared to go to extreme lengths—and court ruthless danger—to prove to her people she deserves the throne.

But there is more at stake than Jazmyne or Iraya know: a new threat is awakening on the other side of the island that could destroy everything they’ve been fighting for.

Trust is scarce, and betrayal a breath away. But Iraya and Jazmine once again find themselves turning to each other—after all, better the witch you know than the nightmare you don’t.

The war has just begun.

Exactly Where You Need to Be by Amelia Diane Coombs

Turtles All the Way Down meets Love and Luck in this romantic road trip story about a teen girl’s last chance to have an epic summer with her best friend before everything changes.

Florie’s OCD and her mother’s worrying have kept her from a lot of things, like having an after-school job and getting her driver’s license. And now that she’s graduated high school, while her best friend Kacey is headed off to Portland in the fall, Florie’s taking a parent-sanctioned gap year off before starting college. When the decision was made, Florie was on board, but now she can't ignore the growing itch to become the person she wants to be and venture outside the quaint, boring Washington town she grew up in.

Winning tickets to see her favorite true crime podcast’s live show in California gives her the opportunity to do just that, if only for a few days. So—unbeknownst to their parents—Kacey and Florie set off on a road trip to San Francisco. The only downside in Florie’s opinion? Sam, Kacey’s older brother and Florie’s forever crush, is their ride. The Samson Hodge, who Florie hasn’t seen since winter break, and who she’d prefer to never see again, if possible. But Florie is willing to put up with Sam if it means one last adventure with her best friend.

Making it to San Francisco and back to Washington without their parents catching on isn’t a given, but one thing is for sure: this trip will change everything.

This Place Is Still Beautiful by XiXi Tian

A sweeping debut novel about first love, complicated family dynamics, and the pernicious legacy of racism. Perfect for fans of Tahereh Mafi, Jandy Nelson, and Emily X.R. Pan, with crossover appeal for readers of Brit Bennett’s The Vanishing Half and Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told You.

The Flanagan sisters are as different as they come. Seventeen-year-old Annalie is bubbly, sweet, and self-conscious, whereas nineteen-year-old Margaret is sharp and assertive. Margaret looks just like their mother, while Annalie passes for white and looks like the father who abandoned them years ago, leaving their Chinese immigrant mama to raise the girls alone in their small, predominantly white Midwestern town.

When their house is vandalized with a shocking racial slur, Margaret rushes home from her summer internship in New York City. She expects outrage. Instead, her sister and mother would rather move on. Especially once Margaret’s own investigation begins to make members of their community uncomfortable.

For Annalie, this was meant to be a summer of new possibilities, and she resents her sister’s sudden presence and insistence on drawing negative attention to their family. Meanwhile Margaret is infuriated with Annalie’s passive acceptance of what happened. For Margaret, the summer couldn’t possibly get worse, until she crosses paths with someone she swore she’d never see again: her first love, Rajiv Agarwal.

As the sisters navigate this unexpected summer, an explosive secret threatens to break apart their relationship, once and for all.

This Place Is Still Beautiful is a luminous, captivating story about identity, sisterhood, and how our hometowns are inextricably a part of who we are, even when we outgrow them.

Zyla & Kai by Kristina Forest

A fresh new YA romance novel by Kristina Forest, Zyla & Kai is an epic star-crossed love story about first love and not just the will they, won’t they— but why can’t they?

While on a school trip to the Poconos Mountains (in the middle of a storm) high school seniors, Zyla Matthews and Kai Johnson, run away together leaving their friends and family confused. As far as everyone knows, Zyla and Kai have been broken up for months. And honestly? Their break up hadn’t surprised anyone. Zyla and Kai met while working together at an amusement park the previous summer, and they couldn’t have been more different.

Zyla was a cynic about love. She’d witnessed the dissolution of her parents’ marriage early in life, and it left an indelible impression. Her only aim was graduating and going to fashion school abroad. Until she met Kai.

Kai was a serial monogamist and a hopeless romantic. He’d put a temporary pause on his dating life before senior year to focus on school and getting into his dream HBCU. Until he met Zyla.

Alternating between the past and present, we see the love story unfold from Zyla and Kai’s perspectives: how they first became the unlikeliest of friends over the summer, how they fell in love during the school year, and why they ultimately broke up… Or did they?

Romantic, heart-stirring and a little mysterious, Zyla & Kai will keep readers guessing until the last chapter.

The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad by Natasha Deen

From award-winning, #OwnVoices author Natasha Deen comes a new funny, honest, YA novel following one girl as she tries to win over her crush before she leaves for college.

Let’s be clear. No matter what her older brother, Robby, says, aspiring screenwriter Tuna Rashad is not “stupidstitious.” She is, however, cool with her Caribbean heritage, which means she is always on the lookout for messages from loved ones who have passed on. Tuna needs to break free from her brother’s loving but over-bearing ways and get him a life (or at least, get him out of hers!). Based on the signs, her ancestors are on board. They also seem to be on board with helping Tuna win over her crush, Tristan Dangerfield. The only hiccup? She has to do it before leaving for college in the fall. When ancient magic tests a newfound love, a dark fate beckons . . .

Magic has been banished in the land of Syhl Shallow for as long as best friends Jax and Callyn can remember. They once loved the stories of the powerful magesmiths and mythical scravers who could conjure fire or control ice, but now they’ve learned that magic only leads to danger: magic is what killed Callyn’s parents, leaving her alone to raise her younger sister. Magic never helped Jax, whose leg was crushed in an accident that his father has been punishing him for ever since. Magic won’t save either of them when the tax collector comes calling, threatening to take their homes if they can't pay what they owe.

Meanwhile, Jax and Callyn are astonished to learn magic has returned to Syhl Shallow -- in the form of a magesmith who's now married to their queen. Now, the people of Syhl Shallow are expected to allow dangerous magic in their midst, and no one is happy about it.

When a stranger rides into town offering Jax and Callyn silver in exchange for holding secret messages for an anti-magic faction, the choice is obvious -- even if it means they may be aiding in a plot to destroy their new king. It’s a risk they’re both willing to take. That is, until another visitor arrives: handsome Lord Tycho, the King’s Courier, the man who’s been tasked with discovering who’s conspiring against the throne.

Suddenly, Jax and Callyn find themselves embroiled in a world of shifting alliances, dangerous flirtations, and ancient magic . . . where even the deepest loyalties will be tested.

Now that a coveted role has opened to anyone with the strength to claim it, he and his partner, Patroclus Fotos, plan to compete and double their odds of winning.

Neither expect infamous beauty Helen Kasios to be part of the prize... or for the complicated fire that burns the moment she looks their way.

Zeus may have decided Helen is his to give to away, but she has her own plans. She enters into the competition as a middle finger to the meddling Thirteen rulers, effectively vying for her own hand in marriage. Unfortunately, there are those who would rather see her dead than lead the city. The only people she can trust are the ones she can't keep her hands off—Achilles and Patroclus. But can she really believe they have her best interests at heart when every stolen kiss is a battlefield?

Top Ten Titles or Covers That Make Me Want to Read a Book

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and That Artsy Reader Girl. A book's cover will often make or break whether I pick it up. Interesting premise but ugly cover? I am way less likely to read it! Titles aren't as important to me, but a great title will have me picking up a book I might otherwise have ignored.

1. Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All by Laura Ruby - I could know absolutely nothing about this book and still want to get my hands on a copy because of how intriguing that title is! It immediately makes me think of a series of doors, wolves right behind, snarling and ready to bite.

2. Goddess in the Machine by Lora Beth Johnson - If you've taken a creative writing class, then you've probably heard the term 'deus ex machina'. It translates to 'god in the machine', and is a plot device in a book where a powerful person saves the characters from an otherwise hopeless situation. I was immediately excited to read the book, and it is absolutely excellent! And I can't wait for the sequel later this month!

3. Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria - Skulls, skulls, skulls! Nothing beat having a skull on a cover, especially if you cover it in gold and make it look like the entrance to a secret chamber. This cover immediately draws my eye, and the description reinforces my interest!

4. Poisoned Apples: Poems for You, My Pretty by Christine Heppermann - We've got double trouble, with a great title and cover! I can't help but read the title in the voice of the evil queen from Snow White, which I imagine was the goal. The cover has the reader focus on the trail of red, and I love how it transitions from a path to a cloak.

5. Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco - I am always here for girls with pointy objects on book covers! Poking a knife to see if it's sharp enough? Yes please! Add in the "Jack the Ripper" part of the title and I am all in. After all, I am a sucker for historical murder.

6. What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo - First off, this title is playing off of a fairy tale, which is always fun. But what really grabs me is the cover. It plays with the theme of showing the scary beneath the surface. Without the slash, the cover would just be a girl, but with it, it shows the monster beneath!

7. From Dust, a Flame by Rebecca Podos - This title evokes a sense of rebirth, like with a phoenix. It's fire sparking from a seeming end. The cover is also really pretty, with the petals of a rose transforming into gems.

8. Here There Are Monsters by Amelinda Bérubé - Like the book What Big Teeth, this cover plays with what it mens to be monsters. An otherwise normal teen girl holds the skull of an animal in front of her face, transforming herself into something *other*. The title is also fun, playing with the line often seen on old and fantasy maps. There might be pieces of a world yet unknown, with strange creatures drawn on and the words "here there be monsters".

9. Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone - Hi, can I have that staircase please? And also that robe? This cover is gothic perfection, with contrasting colors, bright roses, and a woman who appears to be a damsel in distress. I can't wait to read this book, and watch our damsel fall in love with her monsters!

10. Beyond the Ruby Veil by Mara Fitzgerald - While this title doesn't fully make sense without reading the book, the cover is absolutely phenomenal! The white roses would be pretty enough, but it's so detailed that each time I look at it, I feel like I find something new. If you look closely, you'll notice the red rose in the corner, blood on the white roses at the bottom, a spider hiding behind the V, and thorns weaving between the roses! I highly recommend this book, and can't wait to read the sequel next year!

All these covers and titles are just enchanting! Going through my Goodreads to make the selections and slim down my options was incredibly hard, but these won out. Did I pick any books you love? Am I missing any outstanding contenders? Let me know in the comments!
