Waiting on Wednesday (85)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm excited for Renegades by Marissa Meyer! I am a big fan of the recent superhero trend, in both books and movies. I also love Marissa Meyer! I loved The Lunar Chronicles as well. I'll hopefully get to see Marissa this fall, either at YALLFest or at her event at Quail Ridge Books.

Synopsis:

Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

Waiting on Wednesday (84)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm super excited for This Heart of Mine by C.C. Hunter! I read her Shadow Falls series, and instantly fell in love. I'm also part of her street team, so I have an early copy to read. Once I finish my current stack of books, I plan to dig in!

Synopsis:

A new heart saved her life—but will it help her find out what really happened to its donor?

Seventeen-year-old Leah MacKenzie is heartless. An artificial heart in a backpack is keeping her alive. However, this route only offers her a few years. And with her rare blood type, a transplant isn’t likely. Living like you are dying isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. But when a heart becomes available, she’s given a second chance at life. Except Leah discovers who the donor was — a boy from her school — and they’re saying he killed himself. Plagued with dreams since the transplant, she realizes she may hold the clues to what really happened.

Matt refuses to believe his twin killed himself. When Leah seeks him out, he learns they are both having similar dreams and he’s certain it means something. While unraveling the secrets of his brother’s final moments, Leah and Matt find each other, and a love they are terrified to lose. But life and even new hearts don’t come with guarantees. Who knew living, took more courage than dying?

This Heart of Mine is a haunting, poignant tale about living and dying, surviving grief, guilt, and heartache, while discovering love and hope in the midst of sadness.

Sunday Street Team: Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller

Hello, and welcome to my Street Team Sunday stop! Mask of Shadows is an amazing new book that I hope everyone reads! My review of the book will be going up on Teenreads soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Interview:

1. How did you react when you first saw the cover?

I didn’t really know what to do because it was amazing and bright and deadly, and it didn’t look like many covers I had seen before. I loved it. I felt so, so lucky that it was the cover for Mask of Shadows.

2. What advice do you have for younger and aspiring authors?

Keep writing. Write everything you can, read everything you can, and keep your hobbies. Learn everything you can or want to learn. You don’t have to go to school for writing. You don’t have to be any sort of person to be a writer other than someone who writes. Yes, getting published is hard and can be harder depending, but you can do it and many would love to help.

3. Do you write friends/family into your books, or do you keep them separate?

Oh, no. They’re separate. Very separate.

4. What were your favorite books as a child?

Lirael by Garth Nix, Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce, Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith, and weirdly the Mallory books by Carol O’Connell.

5. What's your favorite part of the writing process?

I really enjoy my second round of revising when I rewrite everything to make it tighter. I think it’s very calming.

Synopsis:

Perfect for fantasy fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo, the first book in this new duology features a compelling genderfluid main character, impressive worldbuilding, and fast-paced action.

Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But genderfluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class―and the nobles who destroyed their home.

When Sal steals a flyer for an audition to become a member of The Left Hand―the Queen's personal assassins, named after the rings she wears―Sal jumps at the chance to infiltrate the court and get revenge.

But the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. And as Sal succeeds in the competition, and wins the heart of Elise, an intriguing scribe at court, they start to dream of a new life and a different future, but one that Sal can have only if they survive.

Blog Tour: Second Chances Anthology

I am super excited to be part of the Second Chances Blog Tour! I got to attend RWA for the first time this summer, and it was an absolutely blast! Read on for an interview with two of the authors who write YA stories in the anthology, as well as a synopsis of the book!

Interview:

Tina Ferraro, author of "One Hot Mess"

1.  Describe your story in 3-5 words.

Maddie’s lie backfires.

2. How is your writing process different when writing for an anthology vs for a novel?

The biggest difference is the time I spend planning.  I generally get to know my novel characters pretty well beforehand.  I call it “auditioning,” as I move characters in and out until I find the best balances with other characters and my intended storyline.  But with anthology stories, I start with a general premise, then let the characters evolve on the page, which often leads me to unexpected places.  And to fun!

3. If any of your characters could come to life, which would you most want to meet in real life?

Oh, Hayes-considering I developed an author-crush on him!  :)

Ariella Moon, author of "Covert Hearts"

1. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

When I was in the sixth grade, my English teacher, Mrs. Scroggins, made all of her students enter a national essay contest. Months passed after we turned in our essays, and I forgot about the contest. Then one day, my class was called into an assembly. Mrs. Scroggins proudly announced that the contest results were finally in, and the first place winner was in the room. An excited buzz zinged through the students. When she announced my name, I fell off my chair, which was especially embarrassing since I was wearing a dress. But in that horrible exciting moment the thought, I could be a writer, was born.

2. Have you ever had a second chance that you're grateful for?

Although I have never had a second chance at love, I have had a second chance at happiness, for which I am tremendously grateful. I am fortunate in so many ways; I live every day in a state of gratitude. Hopefully, after reading “Covert Hearts” in Second Chances: A Romance Writers of America Collection, readers will fall in love with Sailor and Nate. Because I would love a second (and third!) chance to write about them.

3.  Describe your story in 3-5 words.

Undercover teen discovers unexpected love.s

Synopsis:

Do you believe in second chances?

Romance Writers of America brings together seventeen of today's hottest authors in an anthology of never-before-published tales that reveal true love always deserves a happy ending.

Follow New York Times best-selling authors J. Kenner and Christina Lauren back to reader-favorite worlds.

With characters who find love through tough situations, in an elegant 1800s ballroom, with an old friend who shows up when least expected, at a tender age when cliques and homework get in the way of relationships, or after a random encounter in an unlikely setting, Second Chances delivers romance to strike every reader’s fancy.

Ariella Author Bio:

Ariella Moon draws upon her experiences as a shaman to create magical Young Adult fiction. Her series include The Two Realms Trilogy, a medieval fantasy adventure, and The Teen Wytche Saga, a series of sweet contemporary paranormal romances.

Ariella spent her childhood searching for a magical wardrobe that would transport her to Narnia. Extreme math anxiety, and taller students that mistook her for a leaning post, marred her youth. Despite these horrors, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Davis. She lives a nearly normal life doting on her extraordinary daughter, two shamelessly spoiled dogs, and a media-shy dragon.

Excerpt:

His soft voice clashes with the intensity of his gaze. “You’re adorable when you’re trying to be mad at me. You needn’t work so hard at it, though. We aren’t meant to be adversaries.”

“I, um…” My thoughts disband, leaving nothing for communication purposes. I’m adorable? Adorable has many definitions. I think my dog is adorable, for example. “That…wasn’t what I was going to ask you.”

He inclines his head. “Okay, then. Ask.”

But that “adorable” echoes through me, clinking around like a penny down a well. “What are we meant to be, then?”

His lips curls up at the corners. “That wasn’t your question, either.”

Waiting on Wednesday (83)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am super excited for Brooding YA Hero by Carrie Ann DiRisio. The main character Broody is hilarious on Twitter, and I can't wait to read an entire book about him. This is basically the best version of a self-help book!

Synopsis:

Have you ever wished you could receive a little guidance from your favorite book boyfriend? Ever dreamed of being the Chosen One in a YA novel? Want to know all the secrets of surviving the dreaded plot twist?

Or maybe you're just really confused about what "opal-tinted, luminous cerulean orbs" actually are?

Well, popular Twitter personality @broodingYAhero is here to help as he tackles the final frontier in his media dominance: writing a book. Join Broody McHottiepants as he attempts to pen Brooding YA Hero: Becoming a Main Character (Almost) as Awesome as Me, a "self-help" guide (with activities--you always need activities) that lovingly pokes fun at the YA tropes that we roll our eyes at, but secretly love.

As his nefarious ex, Blondie DeMeani, attempts to thwart him at every turn, Broody overcomes to detail, among other topics, how to choose your genre, how to keep your love interest engaged (while maintaining lead character status), his secret formula for guaranteed love triangle success, and how to make sure you secure that sequel, all while keeping his hair perfectly coiffed and never breaking a sweat.
