Publisher: Tor Teen
Release: February 12, 2019

Synopsis:

A YA murder mystery in which a young reporter must use her supernatural visions to help track down a killer targeting the young women of Paris.

Paris, 1887.

Sixteen-year-old Nathalie Baudin writes the daily morgue column for Le Petit Journal. Her job is to summarize each day's new arrivals, a task she finds both fascinating and routine. That is, until the day she has a vision of the newest body, a young woman, being murdered--from the perspective of the murderer himself.

When the body of another woman is retrieved from the Seine days later, Paris begins to buzz with rumors that this victim may not be the last. Nathalie's search for answers sends her down a long, twisty road involving her mentally ill aunt, a brilliant but deluded scientist, and eventually into the Parisian Catacombs. As the killer continues to haunt the streets of Paris, it becomes clear that Nathalie's strange new ability may make her the only one who can discover the killer's identity--and she'll have to do it before she becomes a target herself.

Interview:

1. What three words first come to mind when you think of Spectacle?

Atmospheric, dark, murdery. (Can we pretend that’s a word?)

2. What snack would you pair with Spectacle for readers who like to eat while reading?

Well, when they’re in season, I will always give a shoutout to my beloved Cadbury Mini Eggs. But to be on brand with Nathalie and Spectacle, I’d have to say pain au chocolat (chocolate croissants).

3. What's your daily writing process like?

Hmmm…I’m not always able to write daily per se—unless I’m on deadline—because I have a day job and some outside commitments. But I do spend a lot of time each day thinking through plot elements, scenes, and characters even when I’m not at a computer (and often when I’m running or swimming). When I’m on deadline, I’m writing every scrap of time I can—mornings, lunch hour, nights, weekends.  When I’m not on deadline and can write at a more leisurely pace, I like to sit on the sofa or in my study, with my cat beside me and a candle lit. Snacks are never far away, either.

4. What kind of research did you have to do for Spectacle?

So much! Historical and place details great and small, maps of Paris, the occult elements, the etymology of words—I researched all of these things in one form or another. I do have a background in history, so I came into this with some knowledge of the era as well as a good foundation with regard research methods and sources. I used history books, academic articles, the internet, and for some of the places, my own visits and photographs.

5. What YA books would you recommend for fans of Spectacle?
I have not read any of the following, because I don’t like to read inside my subgenre while working on it, but readers and reviewers have likened Spectacle to the Stalking Jack the Ripper, Jackaby, and The Diviners series. All on my TBR!
