Waiting on Wednesday (16)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spines, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I am anxiously awaiting The Warrior by Victoria Scott! I've loved the other Dante Walker books, and am excited to see the conclusion to his story. Dante's character goes through a major change over the course of the series. I really like reading about him, and am constantly intrigued by something new. After the end of The Liberator, I am dying to see what happens next!

Synopsis:

War between heaven and hell is coming, but Dante Walker makes it look damn good.

Dante’s girlfriend, Charlie, is fated to save the world. And Aspen, the girl who feels like a sister, is an ordained soldier. In order to help both fulfill their destiny and win the war, Dante must complete liberator training at the Hive, rescue Aspen from hell, and uncover a message hidden on an ancient scroll.

Dante is built for battle, but even he can’t handle the nightmares where spiders crawl from Aspen’s eyes, or the look on Charlie’s face that foretells of devastation. To make matters worse, the enemy seizes every opportunity to break inside the Hive and cripple the liberators. But the day of reckoning is fast approaching, and to stand victorious, Dante will have to embrace something inside himself he never has before—faith.

EXCERPT:

....I felt my bed dip and sighed, “I’m getting up now.” “I should hope so. You wouldn’t want me to be late on my first day.” I squeaked and frantically pushed the covers from my head making a tangled mess of my hair. I shoved the hair outmy face, spitting out the pieces that stuck to my lips, to glare at the figure sitting at the foot of my bed. He grinned, “That’s an interesting look for you. What do you call it?” I brushed my hair down again and sat up trying to find my voice amidst the shock of him being in my room—of appearing in my room. “You’ve got about ten minutes before I need to pop you over to the fam so hop to it, love, and I’ll give you your reward.” I put my hands on my hips, causing the blanket to pool in my lap. The teasing look left his eyes as he took in myshoulders, bared by the spaghetti straps of my V-neck tank. His eyes roamed over the exposed skin, each pause of hisglance a visual caress. I crossed my arms, unintentionally revealing even more of myself to him, and he inhaled sharply. His eyes flashed to mine, and he searched my face. He slid along the edge of the bed to where I had my back pressed against the wall, his gaze never leaving mine. I was effectively caged in, his body on one side of me and the arm he was leaning on placed by my opposite hip. He radiated heat into the infinitesimal gap that separated our bodies. My lips parted on a swiftly in drawn breath, and when he glanced down at them, I bit the bottom one in anticipation. Chase groaned softly, and heat flared in his eyes. Bracing a hand on the wall beside my head, he leaned in closer. With the other he cupped my face, rubbing his roughthumb over the smoothness of my cheek. We inhaled short shallow gasps through our mouths, and he dipped his head, stopping just short of the spot Iached to have him touch. My lips tingled in anticipation. “Why can’t I get you out my head?” The vapor of his breath tasted sweet as I inhaled, and I waited for him to move that last excruciating millimeter.

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

Title: Dorothy Must Die
Author: Danielle Paige
Publisher: Harper Teen
Series: Dorothy Must Die
Release: April 1, 2014
Pages: 464
Review: 5 Stars

I can't even put my love of this book into words. When I heard about it, I was immediately intrigued. Dorothy came back to Oz and became its evil ruler? Count me in! I waited and waited on this book from the library and when I got it, I dug right in! Dorothy Must Die was SO amazing! I love twists and retellings of classic stories and fairy tales, and this one is definitely one of the best.

The main character is Amy. She is the 'other girl' from Kansas. She lives in modern day, and gets sucked into Oz via, you guessed it, tornado. Amy really grows over the course of the book. She goes from girl simply wishing to get out of her life, to being the one to make changes and take charge.

The end of the book really surprised me. Probably because I was expecting the book to be a standalone. I flew through the last few chapters, dying to see what was going to happen next, only to find out that there were two more books. Cliffhanger doesn't even begin to cover the ending of this amazing book.

As I said before, I love retellings. I love trying to figure out which character is who and what's changed about the plot. Some of my favorites, which you should definitely try if you enjoy Dorothy Must Die, are Cruel Beauty, Wicked, Splintered, Cinder, and Alice in Zombieland! Dorothy Must Die was incredibly fun and I am waiting on the edge of my seat for the next book!

Characterize It (16)

Welcome to Characterize It, a meme held every Thursday and hosted by The YA Book Butterfly. It's a weekly meme, each week featuring a different characteristic. Basically, each week, she'll pick a new characteristic and participating bloggers as well as herself will choose a character that fits that description. For more information, look here.

This week's theme is wild card-just choose a favorite!

I was looking around my room, and realized that my stockpile of favorite characters was starting to run low. But then my eyes landed on a blue, white, and black book on the bottom of my shelf that I read last December. A book no other than The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Hazel is definitely one of my favorite characters. She is witty, smart, and best of all, real. She really feels like the kind of person that you could just meet on the street. Her story isn't perfect in any way, in fact, there's a high likelihood that she's going to die. But Hazel accepts that, and instead brings humor and love into her life. Besides, Shailene Woodley? Best Hazel EVER!

Waiting on Wednesday (15)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spines, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's book is The One by Kiera Cass. While The Elite left some things to be desired, the ending left me on the edge of my seat. I'm dying to know what happens at the end of the series, which guy she choses, etc. My, slightly insane, theory is that America will dump both guys, join the rebels (with her dad, who's obviously part of them already), kill the king, and say 'Bleep you!' to everyone that tried to hold her back. All the while, she's found a new, likable guy in the rebels that I actually enjoy. Then she destroys the monarchy, Aspen mysteriously dies, and remains friends with Maxon. Or, if that fails, America can marry Maxon while Aspen mysteriously disappears. If I have to accept that my theory's weird, I'll take that. But seriously Kiera, if my ending isn't what you wrote, consider writing an alternate ending in a few years just for the heck of it!

Synopsis:

The Selection changed America Singer's life in ways she never could have imagined. Since she entered the competition to become the next princess of Illéa, America has struggled with her feelings for her first love, Aspen—and her growing attraction to Prince Maxon. Now she's made her choice . . . and she's prepared to fight for the future she wants.

Find out who America will choose in The One, the enchanting, beautifully romantic third book in the Selection series!

Reborn by C.C. Hunter

Title: Reborn
Author: C.C. Hunter
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Release: May 20, 2014
Series: Shadow Falls: After Dark
Pages: 386
Review: 4.5 Stars

My only problem with this book was that Kylie wasn't the narrator. As much as I love Della, Kylie is Kylie. I don't know if it's that I relate to her better or that I'm simply more used to her character. While I understand that this series is about Della and will therefore be from her point of view, I'm crossing my fingers and toes for a novella or two from Kylie's POV that *hopefully* has sexy scenes between her and Lucas! :) Oh, also, my one other complaint is that the male protagonist is named Steve. Who names their kid Steve? I was thinking of Blues Clues every time his name popped up.

That said, Della is pretty kick butt. She rocks her roll, but at the same time, has insecurities like everyone else. Della really starts to realize that her friends really do have her back. She starts to finally trust people and let them in during Reborn. Shocking secrets are revealed, about both Della's family and something... else. Meanwhile, Della has to deal with one of her greatest fears, ghosts. It's really cool seeing Della slowly overcome that fear and face it head on.

A side note, Burnett, one of the lead characters who serves as guardian of the camp, can be a real poo poo head. I mean, I like him, most of the time, but I wanted to smack him in the face multiple times in this book. Also, Holiday, the faery who runs Shadow Falls, continues to be awesome. Kylie is all kinds of kick butt, and Miranda's pinkie finger does the talking for her.

I always get worried about spin-off books, but Reborn did not disappoint. Whatever expectations you have, unless that Della will suddenly turn into Kylie, will be met. There is action, major romance, and lots of fun times, mixed in with regular teen issues, such as classes, friendship, family, and boys. Reborn, like C.C.'s other books, really shows friendship and how wonderful it can be. The novel is really fun and I finished it in record time. If you have not already, read the Shadow Falls series, and read Reborn when it comes out in May!

Don't Look Back By Jennifer L Armentrout

Title: Don't Look Back
Author: Jennifer L Armentrout
Publisher: Hyperion Teen
Series: Standalone
Release: April 15, 2014
Pages: 369
Review: 5 Stars

Is there anything Jennifer L Armentrout can't right? Heck no. Don't Look Back was AMAZING! Though I don't read a lot of it, I love the YA thriller genre. Also, Jennifer is a book-making machine! She has something like fifteen books coming out this year, two of which I've already read! Don't Look Back was a creepy, fun ride that I couldn't put down!

The main character is Samantha, Sam for short. She reappears four days after she went missing with no memory, she doesn't even know her own name, but without the girl she disappeared with, her supposed 'best friend' Cassie. Sam learns that before she went missing, she took mean girl to the extreme. Sam realizes that the life she was living before is not one for her, and that she honestly doesn't like who she was before. Sam is a likable character that I wish I could read more of, but I believe this is a standalone. I loved Sam's twin brother Scott. He was simply adorable. It was really interesting seeing Sam reunite with some friends and see the truth about others.

While I had some suspicions about how it would go down, I was not prepared for the full extent. I had a few guesses about characters that were involved in some way, but whoa! I definitely did NOT see that end coming! Thank Jennifer for an amazing, surprising ending! The writing was very well done. I feel that it could have used a bit more world-building, especially with her brother Scott and friend Julie, but can be forgiving due to the fact that Sam doesn't have her memory to help out the readers. If you haven't already, run out to the store and get this book immediately! It was SO good! Also, I want to note that this is Jennifer's first book in hardback, at least in YA. I give Don't Look Back a fat five stars!

Book Blitz: Big Fat Disaster by Beth Fehlbaum

Synopsis:

Insecure, shy, and way overweight, Colby hates the limelight as much as her pageant-pretty mom and sisters love it. It's her life: Dad's a superstar, running for office on a family values platform. Then, a cruel video of Colby half-dressed, made by her cousin Ryan, finds its way onto the internet. Colby plans her own death. Finally, threatened with exposure, Colby must face facts about her selfish mother and her own shame. Harrowing and hopeful, proof that the truth that saves us can come with a fierce and terrible price, Big Fat Disaster is that rare thing, a story that is authentically new.

Characterize It (15)

Welcome to Characterize It, a meme held every Thursday and hosted by The YA Book Butterfly. It's a weekly meme, each week featuring a different characteristic. Basically, each week, she'll pick a new characteristic and participating bloggers as well as herself will choose a character that fits that description. For more information, look here.

This week's theme is most loving parents: parents that are actually around/a big part of the story.

Basically, Wendy Higgins is the queen of awesome parents. Both in her Sweet trilogy and in her recent self-published novel See Me, the parents are around, and they rock. So, yes, in Sweet Evil, her dad is a demon (a good demon that loves her though) and her mom is an angel that died in childbirth, but her step-mom ROCKS! Pattie is amazing, and her roll in Sweet Reckoning is a big one. In See Me, while her parents did marry Robyn off to someone, they were honest with her, and they didn't really have a choice in the matter. Throughout the story, Robyn's parents are there for her, and in the climax of the story, her parents play a large roll. I love when there are decent parents in a story, and Wendy Higgins does it beautifully!

Waiting on Wednesday (14)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spines, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I am super excited for Empower by Jessica Shirvington, the final book in the Embrace series. My biggest pet peeve with books? When the same book, in the same language, comes out months apart in two different countries. Empower has been out in Australia since last fall, which is where the author lives, but doesn't come out in the US until May. How is that fair? It's the same book! You don't even need to translate it! Anyways, rant over, this series is amazing. I'm sad to see it end, but I want this book in my hands NOW! The cover is gorgeous, and is a little different than the rest of the covers. Looking at the covers alone, the reader can really see the journey that Violet has gone through!

Warning, the synopsis contains some major spoilers!

Synopsis:

It has been two years since Violet Eden walked away from the city, her friends, her future and - most importantly - her soulmate, Lincoln. Part angel, part human, Violet is determined to stand by the promises she made to save the one she loves.

Living in the perpetual coldness of a broken soul she survives day to day as a Rogue Grigori in London.

But when an unexpected visitor shows up at her door, the news he bears about someone she swore to protect leaves Violet with no choice.

Even worse, she fears that this might all lead back to the night she tries hardest to forget. And what was taken without her permission.

Violet is going back to New York ... and she knows exactly who is going to be there.

With Phoenix in her dreams and Lincoln in her heart she knows it is only a matter of time before the final choice must be made.

Synopsis:

For Always

The YA Paranormal Romance series, For Always, takes place in beautiful Dandridge, Tennessee, where history and the present collide, giving birth to the story of Beau Brogan and Malyn Reed. Malyn has been able to see spirits her entire life, but once she learned how to differentiate between the living and the dead, she realized that ignoring the ghosts that she encounters on an almost daily basis makes her life much easier—until her and her grandmother, Nellie, move from Nashville to east Tennessee.Beau Brogan was born and raised in Dandridge, where his family were prominent farmers and owned the local general store. Little did they know that the very same rains that would give them the most bountiful crop season ever would be the same rains that would forever change their lives. When Beau saw that the swelling river had flooded their land and had stolen Thomas, the youngest of the Brogan children, he immediately jumped in to save him. Giving his life to save his little brother is something Beau has never regretted, even though it has left him trapped in a state of living death. For the past one-hundred years, Beau has been alone, invisible to the world that continues to change around him. Characterize It (14)

This week's theme is still good: character that retains their likability throughout the series.

With many books, the main character is awesome, except for the half of a book where I just want to stab the main character and all her friends. There almost always comes a point, where I can't get over how stupid/weak/annoying the main character is acting. Off the top of my head, the character that really retains their likability the best is Kylie from the Shadow Falls series. I have reread those books so many times, and not once have I wanted to kill her. She does some embarrassing stuff, but that's life. I really like Kylie's character, and can't wait to read the spin-off series!

Who do you think is the most likable character in YA?

So, I promised you, my loyal readers, that when the blog reached 50 followers and the Twitter page reached 500 followers, I would giveaway signed copies of Pivot Point by Kasie West, The Madman's Daughter Megan Shepherd, and Fracture by Megan Miranda. Well, during the coarse of the giveaway last week, we reached these goals, plus loads more! Because the Facebook page also surpassed 200 likes (which I thought would NEVER happen), I am also giving away a bunch of swag to a couple lucky winners! So what does this mean? A chance to win THREE books and LOADS of swag! Enjoy!

Interview:

As a special gift, I also have interviews with Mindee Arnett and Kristen Simmons! Read on for the awesomeness!

Kristen Simmons

1. How does it feel, finishing the Article Five trilogy?

Really exciting in a way, like a dream coming true. At the same time it's very sad. I've walked around with these characters in my head for so long, it will be very sad to see them go.

2. Can you tell us anything about what you're working on now?

Yes! I'm so thrilled about it. My new stand-alone story, The Glass Arrow, takes place in a society where women are endangered. One girl is caught in the wild and sold at auction. It seems a little bleak, but there's so much hope in it. I hope you enjoy it! It comes out next January (2015).

3. What's your favorite thing to do when not writing?

Hang out with my family. I have a toddler, so we keep busy. We actually just got back from the zoo! So fun.

4. Which of the Articles in Article Five are you most likely to break?

OMG. Which one? I'm breaking so many on a daily basis! I'd probably get nabbed for contraband though. Here's what the Moral Statues say:

Article 2: Paraphernalia considered immoral is hereby banned and shall not be owned, bought/sold or traded for in any capacity. a) Immoral items include any form of media (audio, visual or tactile) in any medium (print, radio, televised, etc.) deemed inappropriate, including those items scandalous, violent, sexual or in opposition to the Moral
Statutes as determined by the Church of America (For a full list of items see Addendum B).
b) All items identified as immoral are to be disposed of in identified CONTRABAND ITEMS receptacles.
c) Every citizen is subject to search and seizure of their home and personal property in order to assure compliance with Section 2, Article 2 of the Moral Statutes. Violators in possession of contraband are subject to trial by an investigative board of the Federal Bureau of Reformation and sentenced appropriately.

5. What is your daily routine like as an author?

Wake up, take care of my family, go teach JAZZERCISE!!! (That's right, I said it!) then I write during my son's naptime. Then we play, then I make dinner, then I collapse. It's busy these days.

Thanks for having me, Isabel!

Mindee Arnett

1. Describe your newest book, The Nightmare Dilemma, in five words.

Murder mystery at a magical school.

2. What's one of your worst nightmares?

My worst nightmares usually involve betrayal by a love one. And the nightmare part isn’t ever the betrayal itself, but the person’s reaction to me finding out about it. Instead of being upset that I’ve found out, the person usually acts completely indifferent to my tears/anger/rage—whatever the emotion is. That is always the worst nightmare for me—confronting indifference.

3. What are some things that have served as inspiration to you?

I’m inspired primarily by stories and visuals. I love books and film, and whenever the well of inspiration is feeling dry, I seek out an awesome story to fill me up and to set my mind on fire.

4. What are you working on now?

I just completed line edits for Polaris, the sequel to Avalon. And now I’m working on a proposal for my next project. I would say more, but then I would have to kill you. Mwhahahaha…

5. Lastly, any advice to aspiring authors?

My best advice is always this: Keeping trying and change it up. The most important lesson a writer learns is that you have to keep at it. Writing is as much skill as it is talent and inspiration. You really have to hone your craft through hours of practice. But it’s also crucial that you don’t always keep trying the same old thing—especially if it’s not working. You have to try new things, practice different skills in order to succeed.

Thanks for the interview!

Waiting on Wednesday (13)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spines, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I am super excited for House of Ivy & Sorrow by Natalie Whipple and The Taking by Kimberly Derting! The cover alone of House of Ivy & Sorrow inspired me to read it, and I'm holding my breath waiting for it. I love everything by Kimberly Derting that I've read, and The Taking looks intriguing. The book has to do with aliens, which is super cool, and the cover is BEAUTIFUL! Make sure to pick up these two books!

Synopsis:

House of Ivy & Sorrow

Josephine Hemlock has spent the last 10 years hiding from the Curse that killed her mother. But when a mysterious man arrives at her ivy-covered, magic-fortified home, it’s clear her mother’s killer has finally come to destroy the rest of the Hemlock bloodline. Before Jo can even think about fighting back, she must figure out who she’s fighting in the first place. The more truth Jo uncovers, the deeper she falls into witchcraft darker than she ever imagined. Trapped and running out of time, she begins to wonder if the very Curse that killed her mother is the only way to save everyone she loves.

The Taking

When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas 'n' Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn't aged a day.

Everything else about Kyra's old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.

Confused and lost, Kyra isn't sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin's annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to. As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra's father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?

Happy Birthday Jess

Welcome, Jess, to the final stop on your birthday bonanza! Thank you to Eli at Reality Lapse for hosting this awesome event!

As you probably know, I LOVE chatting with you on Twitter, and you really light up the blogosphere. It's always fun to have you around, and I hope to meet you in person someday! Since I cannot give you a gift, here is a picture of books made out of cake!

I couldn't help but look at the books you love, and notice that we have a LOT in common! A few names popped out at me.

One, was Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. Easily one of the best books out there, I'm glad to know you enjoy it. I hope you have many more great years reading her books! And, here's a picture of a dagger made out of cake!

Next up is Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard! I have major love for this series, and I know you do to. The final book comes out this year, and trust me when I say that you'll really enjoy it! And now I present to you, a zombie cake!

Lastly, I have The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan! I've been reading those books for years now, and don't know why anyone wouldn't like them. Your choice in books really shows that YOU have the best taste! And, of course, a Percy Jackson cake!

Thank you Jess, for being the awesome blogger that you are! The blogosphere would not be the same without you! And happy birthday once again!
