Waiting on Wednesday (117)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am anticipating Rule by Ellen Goodlett! Before I'd even read the synopsis, I knew I needed to read the book. Just look at that gorgeous cover! It's about three young women, all illegitimate daughters of the dying king. While I don't doubt that I'll end up loving one the most, all three girls sound super intriguing! I can't wait to find out the secrets this book is holding! And lucky for me, I just got an ARC of it to dive into!

Synopsis:

Three girls with three deadly secrets. Only one can wear the crown.

The king is dying, his heir has just been murdered, and rebellion brews in the east. But the kingdom of Kolonya and the outer Reaches has one last option before it descends into leaderless chaos.

Or rather, three unexpected options.

Zofi has spent her entire life trekking through the outer Reaches with her band of Travelers. She would do anything to protect the band, her family. But no one can ever find out how far she's already gone.

Akeylah was raised in the Eastern Reach, surrounded by whispers of rebellion and abused by her father. Desperate to escape, she makes a decision that threatens the whole kingdom.

Ren grew up in Kolonya, serving as a lady's maid and scheming her way out of the servants' chambers. But one such plot could get her hung for treason if anyone ever discovers what she's done.

When the king summons the girls, they arrive expecting arrest or even execution. Instead they learn the truth: they are his illegitimate daughters, and one must become his new heir. But someone in Kolonya knows their secrets, and that someone will stop at nothing to keep the sisters from their destiny... to rule.

Magic, mystery, and blackmail abound in this sensational and striking fantasy debut.

Synopsis:

“I know how to watch my back. I’m the only one that ever has.”
India Maxwell hasn’t just moved across the country—she’s plummeted to the bottom rung of the social ladder. It’s taken years to cover the mess of her home life with a veneer of popularity. Now she’s living in one of Boston’s wealthiest neighborhoods with her mom’s fiancé and his daughter, Eloise. Thanks to her soon-to-be stepsister’s clique of friends, including Eloise’s gorgeous, arrogant boyfriend Finn, India feels like the one thing she hoped never to be seen as again: trash.
But India’s not alone in struggling to control the secrets of her past. Eloise and Finn, the school’s golden couple, aren’t all they seem to be. In fact, everyone’s life is infinitely more complex than it first appears. And as India grows closer to Finn and befriends Eloise, threatening the facades that hold them together, what’s left are truths that are brutal, beautiful, and big enough to change them forever…

Excerpt:

“India, I’m not using her. I mean, I am, but it’s not like that. Eloise is getting what she wants out of this relationship, as well.”

“Like what?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“You are using her.”

“I’m not.” His chair screeched as he pulled it closer so our knees touched. His dark eyes moved over my face and I sucked in my breath at the open appreciation I saw there. “I’m not using her…but we are in a relationship together. I guess it just never occurred to me that I might actually meet someone in high school. Someone I…”

That feeling in my chest, that thick, hot feeling, threatened to overwhelm me at all the things he wasn’t saying. “Finn, Eloise is going to be my family.”

He looked so forlorn it took everything within me not to reach for him.

“What is it you’re hiding?”

“I can’t tell you. Please, just trust me.”

Hurt and frustration swept through me in equal measure but I tamped it down. It wasn’t my place to demand his secrets.

My frustration was suddenly mirrored in his eyes as he looked up at me. “I wish things were different.”

But they weren’t different. And yet they were the same, history repeating itself. I cared about someone and they didn’t care enough about me back to be honest about what was really going on.

I didn’t know if I was angry at Finn or just angry that nothing ever seemed to be easy for me. Everything was always a fight.

It felt like I lived in a constant clusterfuck.

I gave a huff of laughter. “Story of my life.” I shook my head, grabbed up my bag and, unable to look at him, said, “Thank you for your help tonight.”

“You’re not leaving without me.”

His protectiveness confused and pissed me off even more. “I’m not? Funny, it looks like that’s exactly what I’m doing.”

His familiar scowl was back in place at my sarcasm. “You’re also not going home alone after what happened here. I’ll give you a ride.”

“Finn.” I slumped, suddenly feeling exhausted. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Sadness flittered through his eyes before he managed a carefully blank expression. “I think I can handle driving you home.”

Still a trembling mess after everything that had happened, I gave in and followed Finn out to his car.

The tension that we’d shared before was nothing compared to how it was now. Now that Finn had in a roundabout way admitted he liked me and I’d realized that what I was feeling for him was attraction, the tension could not be mistaken for anything else but sexual.

I’d never felt anything like it before—it was the most frustrating, scary and exhilarating feeling in the world.

When we eventually pulled up outside the house, the guilt washed over me. I shouldn’t be feeling this way about Eloise’s boyfriend and he certainly shouldn’t be feeling this way about me.

I felt like we were to blame for the whole thing but I didn’t know why.

I hadn’t asked the universe to make Finn like me.

And I had definitely not intended to like him in return.

“India,” he said just as I moved to get out of his car. “I’ve never really cared what anybody thought of me before…but I really don’t want you to think I’m a bad person.”

I stared into his beautiful eyes. “I can’t imagine ever thinking you’re a bad person. I meant it earlier…thank you for coming for me tonight. I’ll never forget it.”

“This feels weirdly like a goodbye,” he said with a bitter twist to his gorgeous lips.

“Maybe it is. I guess we’re both just a complication the other doesn’t need.”

Slowly, so slowly my heart had time to increase in hard, steady thumps, Finn slid his hand over the center console between us and stroked his thumb along the side of my hand. I felt that simple touch in every nerve, my body reacting to it in a way it never had to the touches and deep kisses that had come before it.

I stared at our hands for a moment, wondering how different my life could be if Finn wasn’t Eloise’s boyfriend, if we’d just met as strangers at school, felt the inexplicable bond between us and were free to do something about it.

Suddenly very aware of how long I’d been sitting outside the house in his car, I fumbled for the door handle. “See you around, Finn.”

Waiting on Wednesday (116)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am eagerly anticipating Access Restricted by Gregory Scott Katsoulis! It is the sequel to All Rights Reserved, which takes place in a near future world where every word and expression is trademarked or copywrited and you have to pay to use any of them. The main character Speth accidentally caused a revolution in book one, and I'm excited to see what happens next. While the first book wraps up nice enough, there is still a lot of this world that can be explored. I'm especially excited to see what the world is like outside their city.

Synopsis:

In this gripping sequel to All Rights Reserved, Speth Jime has freed her home of Portland from the oppressive system that forced everyone to pay for every word they spoke. Now she will discover the cost of that freedom, and the devastating secrets of the world beyond her dome.

On the day she went silent, Speth never meant for anyone to follow her lead—or to start a rebellion of Silents. But after taking down the tyrant Silas Rog and freeing the city from his grasp, everyone is looking to Speth for answers she doesn’t have. All she wants is to find her parents, who are shackled to a lifetime of servitude in exchange for a debt they can never repay. But how can Speth leave her friends to fend for themselves when she’s the reason their city is in chaos?

When the government threatens to restore the WiFi and take back the city, Speth is forced to flee with a ragtag group of friends by her side. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey outside the dome they’ve lived in their entire lives, in search of a better future. Along the way, Speth will discover the shattering truth about their world…and the role she’ll need to play to save it.

Some Royal Books for a Royal Wedding

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few days, you know that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got married today. In honor of the occasion, I thought I'd share some awesome books with royals or a royalty theme.

Royals by Rachel Hawkins - Her older sister is marrying the crown prince of Scotland. It doesn't get more Royal than that!

All That Glows by Ryan Graudin - Emrys is a faery sent to guard the British crown prince. He's a bit wild and of course they fall in love!

Long May She Reign by Rhiannon Thomas - A scientist who is 23rd in line for the throne finally finds herself as queen when the rest of the people in line get killed at a deadly banquet.

Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts - In Royal Bastards, all the main characters are bastard children of the nobility. When a visiting princess joins them at the bastards table, things get crazy fast!

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard - Mare Barrow lives in a world divided by the color of your blood. Silvers with magical abilities rule the world with an iron fist. Red bloods (like Mare) are forced to toil away or die. When Mare develops her own abilities, her entire world is turned upside down.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas - Teenage assassin Celaena Sardothien is freed from enslavement only to have to act as champion for the crown prince, son of the king she hates. While at the palace, she befriends a princess from a country also oppressed by the king.

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting - In Ludania, you may only speak the language of your class. But Charlaina has a secret. She can understand all languages. But everything changes when she overhears a conversation in a language she isn't supposed to understand.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer - In this retelling of the classic tale Cinderella, Cinder is a cyborg mechanic who is hired to fix Prince Kai's robot. It doesn't take long for sparks to fly.

Blog Tour: The Queen's Rising by Rebecca Ross

I am so excited to help close out The Queen's Rising blog tour! Below you will find my glowing review,  an exclusive interview with the author, and a giveaway!

Title: The Queen's Rising
Author: Rebecca Ross
Series: The Queen's Rising
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 464
Review: 5 Stars

Synopsis:

When her seventeenth summer solstice arrives, Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron.

Growing up in the southern Kingdom of Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her for such a life. While some are born with an innate talent for one of the five passions—art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge—Brienna struggled to find hers until she belatedly chose to study knowledge. However, despite all her preparations, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true—the solstice does not go according to plan and she is left without a patron.

Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, and with no other choices, she accepts. But there is much more to his story, and Brienna soon discovers that he has sought her out for his own vengeful gain. For there is a dangerous plot being planned to overthrow the king of Maevana—the archrival kingdom of Valenia—and restore the rightful queen, and her magic, to the northern throne. And others are involved—some closer to Brienna than she realizes.

With war brewing between the two lands, Brienna must choose whose side she will remain loyal to—passion or blood. Because a queen is destined to rise and lead the battle to reclaim the crown. The ultimate decision Brienna must determine is: Who will be that queen?

Interview:

1. If your characters were transported to our world, how would they react?

Brienna would love social media. Cartier would absolutely hate it.
Luc and Merei would be fascinated with Spotify.
Jourdain would be aghast by fast food and the news.
Isolde would immediately buy a car and go on a road trip.

2. What books did you read as a child?

I loved The Chronicles of Narnia and the Dear America Diaries.

3. What upcoming YA books are you excited for?

I am so excited for Stephanie Garber’s Legendary! I also cannot wait for Hafsah Faizal’s We Hunt the Flame.

4. If you could live in any genre, what would it be and why?

Definitely Fantasy. I would love to have magic and wear cloaks and ride horses from town to town.

5. Do you prefer HEAs (Happily Ever Afters) or open endings?

Ooh, I think I have to go with HEAs. As a reader, I really like to have closure by that last page.

6. Do you have any advice for young writers?

Read and write as much as you can! That is the best way to grow your craft and learn how to bring a story together from start to finish. Also, don’t write to necessarily “get published.” Write because you love and enjoy it.

Review:

First Impressions

I knew right off the bat that I was going to like The Queen's Rising. This year has such a wealth of high fantasy coming out, and I've enjoyed discovering every one! Also, lost queens and princesses are my jam! I started reading the book pretty close to the deadline for the review, so I knew I would have to read it fast, but that didn't end up being a problem because I absolutely devoured it. I read The Queen's Rising in one day, and would have read it in one sitting if I hadn't had to go to work. My one major problem was that the beginning of the book (at least the ARC version) had a family tree and such that contained MAJOR spoilers for the book. I love that they were included, but I hope that they are moved to the back of the book for the final version. While it is the first book in a series, The Queen's Rising reads like a standalone novel but will still leave readers hungering for more in that world.

Characters

The main character is Brienna. She has grown up not quite knowing what and who she wants to be. Brienna is also a child of two worlds. Her parents, neither of whom she knows, came from two different countries. Her mother died when she was young, and her grandfather refuses to tell her who her father is. This creates so conflict for her, but she accepts his response to her inquiries that her father isn't worth knowing. Brienna often doubts herself, but within reason. She doesn't mope around, despairing about everything she isn't. Brienna underestimates her value, but still knows she has it.

The chemistry between Brienna and her teacher Cartier is clear very early in the book. She has an attraction to him that she doesn't even realize she has. It's a slow burn romance, and it was fun to explore their relationship as the book progressed, especially once they move beyond the teacher-student phase.

World Building

While the world is high fantasy, in many ways it is still distinctly like our own. One of the major things is that they use the same calendar we do. From the descriptions of places, as a whole it reminds me of the UK. Maevana very much reminds me of Scotland, and Valenia of England. I felt that the world building was strong, though a little heavy-handed at times. There was often the need to remind the reader that someone was "acting Maevan" or "acting Valenian". I feel like the amount of times that phrase was used could have been lessened, especially once the world building was set up.

Praise:

“Sophisticated plotting is the hallmark of this debut, which deftly navigates complex, treasonous plots and political intrigue. [A] Stunning literary adventure.” —Booklist (starred review)

“A sprawling girl-powered fantasy. A compelling page-turner. Hand this magical debut to readers who loved Shannon Hale’s Princess Academy or Sarah J. Maas’s “Throne of Glass” series.” —School Library Journal

Author Bio:

Rebecca Ross was born and raised in Georgia, where she continues to reside with her husband, her lively Australian Shepherd, and her endless piles of books. She loves coffee, the night sky, chalk art, maps, the mountains, and growing wildflowers in her yard. And a good story, of course.

Waiting on Wednesday (115)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am excited for These Rebel Waves by Sara Raasch! I loved her Snow Like Ashes trilogy, so I cannot wait for this. There are so many cool ideas that will be explored in this book. Enemy kingdoms come up a lot in high fantasy, but I will always read more. Also, there are pirates! There are not enough pirates in YA. Then again, I don't know if there could ever be enough pirates. This feels like a really original high fantasy novel that I can't wait to get my hands on!

Synopsis:

Adeluna is a soldier. Five years ago, she helped the magic-rich island of Grace Loray overthrow its oppressor, Argrid, a country ruled by religion. But adjusting to postwar life has not been easy. When an Argridian delegate vanishes during peace talks with Grace Loray’s new Council, Argrid demands brutal justice—but Lu suspects something more dangerous is at work.

Devereux is a pirate. As one of the outlaws called stream raiders who run rampant on Grace Loray, he pirates the island’s magic plants and sells them on the black market. But after Argrid accuses raiders of the diplomat’s abduction, Vex becomes a target. An expert navigator, he agrees to help Lu find the Argridian—but the truth they uncover could be deadlier than any war.

Benat is a heretic. The crown prince of Argrid, he harbors a secret obsession with Grace Loray’s forbidden magic. When Ben’s father, the king, gives him the shocking task of reversing Argrid’s fear of magic, Ben has to decide if one prince can change a devout country—or if he’s building his own pyre.

As conspiracies arise, Lu, Vex, and Ben will have to decide who they really are . . . and what they are willing to become for peace.

Top Ten Books I Hated But Am Glad I Read

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and The Artsy Reader Girl. In general, I don't appreciate books I hate. I can not like a book easily enough, but it takes a lot for me to hate a book. But that said, I'll mention books I hated but can at least have bragging rights for.

1. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

2. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

3. Lord of the Flies by William Golding - extra bleh

4. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

5. The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis - I loved all the other Narnia books though

6. Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell - literally nothing happens

7. The Giver by Lois Lowry - I actually liked the movie more *hangs head in shame*

8. The Awakening by Kate Chopin

9. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

10. A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park

Waiting on Wednesday (114)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I can't wait to read Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton! I actually have an ARC waiting for me right now that I have been dying to pick up. If only I could get through my current TBR stack. There is a wealth of high fantasy coming out this year, and I bet this one will be amazing as well! Also, that cover is GORGEOUS! The swirlies and the arrows and the color scheme all come together to make one amazing cover! And that tag line immediately makes me curious about what is going to happen!

Synopsis:

In the ancient river kingdom, touch is a battlefield, bodies the instruments of war. Seventeen-year-old Mia Rose has pledged her life to hunting Gwyrach: women who can manipulate flesh, bones, breath, and blood.

Not women. Demons. The same demons who killed her mother without a single scratch.

But when Mia's father suddenly announces her marriage to the prince, she is forced to trade in her knives and trousers for a sumptuous silk gown. Only after the wedding goes disastrously wrong does she discover she has dark, forbidden magic—the very magic she has sworn to destroy.

Blog Tour: Genesis by Brendan Reichs

I am super excited to be hosting Brendan Reichs on my blog today! Read on for an exclusive interview and giveaway!

Interview:

1. If you could co-write a book with any other author, who would it be and why?

Ally Condie! Because I did! It’s a new middle-grade series called The Darkdeep and it releases this fall from Bloomsbury on 10/2/18. We’re tremendously excited about it. Think The Goonies meets Stranger Things. Or I guess I could write another Virals book with my Mom? Who knows!

2. If you were to spend an afternoon with your characters, what would you do?

I think we’d hike. Nemesis and Genesis are set in a beautiful little vacation town named Fire Lake, which is based off the real town of Sandpoint, Idaho. It’s surrounded by national parks, mountains, and has a killer lake, so that feels like a pretty good place to get outdoors. I’m actually answering this question while flying to Sandpoint right now, and I’m pretty freaking excited about it.

3. What projects do you have in the works?

The Darkdeep with Ally Condie, which I mentioned above, and the third book in the Project Nemesis series, which will conclude the adventures of Min, Tack, and Noah. At least, I think it will. The name of the third book and its cover will be revealed at The BookCon this summer, so stayed tuned to my social media channels.

4. What upcoming YA books are you excited for?

I just bought Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman, but haven’t had a chance to read it yet, so I can’t wait to dig into that. I’m also looking forward to finishing Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, which I just started and I’m loving every page of. Everyone should read it.

5. What books did you enjoy as a child?

I loved epic fantasy, the longer the better. Tad Williams. Terry Brooks. Raymond Feist. Tolkien, of course. I lived for these long, sprawling, massive books with their own unique worlds. I still do, and some day I intend to write one of my own.

6. What advice do you have for young writers?

Write write write. Gotta practice the craft to master it. Good luck!

Waiting on Wednesday (113)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I am excited for The Supervillain and Me by Danielle Banas. It's being released by Swoon Reads, which is always a promising sign. I don't think I've read a Swoon Reads book I haven't liked yet. The synopsis doesn't give too much away, just that the main character Abby is the younger sibling of a superhero, and that she gets involved with her city's newest supervillain. The premise is incredibly promising, and I can't wait to read it!

Synopsis:

As witty as it is heartpounding, this fresh take on the beloved superhero genre is all about finding your own way to shine even when it seems everyone else around you is, well... super.

Never trust a guy in spandex.

In Abby Hamilton’s world, superheroes do more than just stop crime and save cats stuck in trees—they also drink milk straight from the carton and hog the television remote. Abby’s older brother moonlights as the famous Red Comet, but without powers of her own, following in his footsteps has never crossed her mind.

That is, until the city’s newest vigilante comes bursting into her life.

After saving Abby from an attempted mugging, Morriston’s fledgling supervillain Iron Phantom convinces her that he’s not as evil as everyone says, and that their city is under a vicious new threat.
